DS Smith launches waste-reducing e-commerce packaging solution

UK – DS Smith, a leading fibre-based packaging manufacturer, has unveiled Tape Back, an innovative packaging design to reduce waste in e-commerce.

By eliminating the need for single-use plastic tear strips, Tape Back enhances sustainability while ensuring a seamless experience for retailers and consumers.

The design features a single glue strip that supports two e-commerce shipments, allowing consumers to reuse the original packaging for returns.

This efficient solution aligns with DS Smith’s commitment to circular design and environmentally conscious packaging.

Cheryl Holliday, Director of Marketing for North America, emphasized the importance of sustainability in today’s e-commerce landscape, “Consumers increasingly expect sustainable solutions, particularly for returns.

“Tape Back directly addresses this demand by providing an environmentally friendly and efficient return process, demonstrating our dedication to redefining packaging for a changing world.”

Tape Back offers seamless returns through its innovative design. It features a simple return strip that allows consumers to reuse the original packaging.

This eliminates the need for additional materials, making the return process more convenient and environmentally friendly.

The design stands out for its innovation. It replaces single-use plastic tear strips with a fully recyclable solution, significantly reducing the environmental impact of e-commerce packaging while maintaining functionality.

Sustainability is at the core of Tape Back. The design promotes sustainable behavior by avoiding the use of non-recyclable components and simplifying the recycling process for consumers.

It ensures that materials can easily be recycled at home, aligning with the growing demand for eco-conscious solutions.

Functionality is another key advantage of Tape Back. The solution minimizes waste while reducing the risk of returned goods being damaged. Additionally, it simplifies the returns process for suppliers, making it more efficient and cost-effective.

True to DS Smith’s ethos of “Redefining Packaging for a Changing World,” Tape Back has been optimized to use less material while improving supply chain efficiency.

The innovative design reduces the use of silicon tape, hot melt, and corrugated board, doubling its circular design metric score.

This new solution reflects DS Smith’s dedication to sustainability and innovation. It ensures that the needs of consumers and businesses are met without compromising environmental goals.

Meanwhile, in August last year, the company introduced an innovative packaging solution for Funzy, specializing in modular play sofas for children.

Designed with multiple secondary uses, this new packaging enhances the unboxing experience and extends the life of the packaging itself.

Crafted from DS Smith’s corrugated cardboard, the packaging ensures protection during product transportation and storage.

Beyond its primary function, cardboard can be transformed into practical items such as shelves and engaging toys for children.

The bottom flap features die-cuts that allow children to assemble various figures, including rockets and rocking horses.
