UK – International packaging company DS Smith has introduced an innovative packaging solution for Funzy, a company specializing in modular play sofas for children.
Designed with multiple secondary uses, this new packaging enhances the unboxing experience and extends the life of the packaging itself.
Crafted from DS Smith’s corrugated cardboard, the packaging ensures protection during product transportation and storage.
Beyond its primary function, the cardboard can be transformed into practical items such as shelves and engaging toys for children.
The bottom flap features die-cuts that allow children to assemble various figures, including rockets and rocking horses.
Additionally, the material is craft-friendly, encouraging personalization with paint and stickers, fostering creativity in young users.
According to DS Smith, the packaging design is intended to foster a learning process, making the unboxing experience exciting and inspiring for both children and adults.
Julian Rasp, Account Manager of DS Smith’s packaging division in Germany and Switzerland, commented, “We are happy to assist Funzy in contributing to the circular economy by designing a custom sustainable packaging solution for their products, while also raising children’s awareness of reusing and upcycling through the secondary use of the packaging.”
In another recent collaboration, DS Smith partnered with home appliance brand Versuni to create an eco-friendly packaging solution for the new Philips Baristina coffee machine.
This fibre-based packaging eliminates plastic bags and is designed to be both recycled and recyclable.
It features corrugated buffers with an anti-scratch coating to protect the coffee machine, and the design enhances the unboxing experience with the machine centrally displayed amidst bold visuals and artwork.
To assess the packaging’s sustainability, DS Smith utilized its Circular Design Metrics (CDM) tool, which evaluates the impact of packaging designs on various sustainability indicators, including renewable content, recyclability, and supply chain optimization.
This tool helps DS Smith identify the product’s sustainability performance and areas for improvement.
Thoran Ottens, Divisional Key Account Manager at DS Smith Electronics, emphasized the importance of meeting consumer expectations for sustainable packaging, “Consumer trends and expectations are fast-moving, and in keeping with desires for sustainable packaging, we designed this product solution to create a high-end visual impact for both the shelf and online.”
Operating in over 30 countries, DS Smith provides sustainable packaging solutions, paper products, and recycling services.
Over the past three years, the company has invested more than €50 million (US$54.2 million) in its Portuguese facilities, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and innovation.
