Medline’s new Pick Pack Pro supercharges healthcare fulfillment with Ranpak’s right-size packaging

Pick Pack Pro uses Tompkins Robotics to sort and route order items, Trew for integrated movement and sortation of order cartons, and Ranpak’s sustainable automated packing solutions for right-size packaging and shipping.

USA – Medline has launched its Pick Pack Pro automated fulfillment system at its Montgomery distribution center, combining order batching, robotic sortation, and Ranpak’s sustainable packing solutions to improve delivery speed and accuracy for high-volume healthcare orders supporting Medicare benefit providers.

The system integrates enhanced order batching, robotic sortation, and automated packing and shipping to overcome challenges of maintaining delivery times and order accuracy.

Brad Mariam, executive vice president of non-acute care sales at Medline, explained that the company wants to help health plan providers drive greater member satisfaction and better care outcomes.

He noted that Pick Pack Pro enables Medline to support commitments its health plan customers make to their members by getting benefit items delivered quickly and accurately to their homes.

Three Partners, One Seamless System

The Montgomery installation was engineered with three vendors and represents Medline’s first capital and staffing investment in this technology.

Sean Halligan, executive vice president for operations at Medline, explained that Pick Pack Pro uses Tompkins Robotics to sort and route order items, Trew for integrated movement and sortation of order cartons, and Ranpak’s sustainable automated packing solutions for right-size packaging and shipping.

This combination tackles a critical healthcare fulfillment pain point: shipping small, high-volume benefit items directly to patients’ homes without wasteful overpackaging or delivery delays.

Right-Size Packaging Delivers

Earlier this year, Medline expanded its partnership with Ranpak, integrating Cut’it! EVO and Form’it! systems into a high-volume distribution center.

These systems produce custom-sized boxes and paper void fill on demand, eliminating pre-manufactured box inventories and reducing dimensional weight shipping charges.

For healthcare items such as diabetes supplies, wound care products, and durable medical equipment, right-size packaging ensures minimal material use while protecting contents, cutting both costs and environmental impact.

Scaling Across 45 Distribution Centers

Medline is set to expand Pick Pack Pro across its network of 45 U.S. distribution centers.

The company, one of the largest privately held manufacturers and distributors of healthcare supplies globally, serves most American hospitals and health systems.

As Medicare Advantage plans grow and more benefit administration shifts to health plans, accurate and efficient direct-to-member fulfillment becomes a competitive differentiator.

The Bottom Line

For the packaging industry, Medline’s investment signals growing demand for integrated automation that combines robotics, sortation, and sustainable packaging in a single workflow.

The partnership with Ranpak proves that right-size packaging is not an add-on but a core component of modern fulfillment systems.

As more distributors automate, on-demand custom box production will shift from nice-to-have to table stakes.
