Mondi expands food packaging range with new corrugated, solid board options

The expansion reflects trends such as lightweighting, retail-ready packaging and demand for fibre-based materials.

UK – Mondi has introduced an expanded portfolio of food packaging solutions that now incorporates solid board products and digital printing features.

The company completed its acquisition of Schumacher Packaging’s Western European operations in April 2025, which added production sites and enhanced supply capabilities across the region.

The updated range combines corrugated and solid board formats with Mondi’s existing flexible packaging lines, creating a broad selection for food producers.

Solutions focus on lighter materials for smaller portions, retail-ready designs that speed up shelf stocking, and fully renewable or recyclable options compliant with EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation requirements.

Paulus Goëss, Chief Operating Officer for Corrugated Solutions at Mondi, explained in a statement that the food industry faces quick shifts from new EU rules and consumer demands.

He noted the expanded lineup allows lighter packs with better shelf presence and full recyclability to meet those changes.

Specific applications cover fresh produce with ventilated Grow&Go trays and stackable boxes, meat and seafood using high-strength leakproof trays and wraps, dairy items in multipacks for refrigerated transport, frozen foods in printed solid board boxes suitable for deep-freeze conditions, and snacks with custom displays like TwinBox innovations.

For beverages, options include Hug&Hold clips for PET bottles and TankerBox for bulk shipping. E-commerce needs get addressed through designs with easy-open features and protective inserts for online grocery deliveries.

In a separate development reported earlier this year, Mondi started up a US$454 million paper machine at its Štětí mill in the Czech Republic in late 2024.

The facility produces high-strength papers ideal for lightweight corrugated packaging in fast-moving consumer sectors, supporting further growth in fiber-based food and e-commerce applications.

Another recent project saw Mondi collaborate with Turkish exporter Özler Tarım on double-wall corrugated boxes for fruits and vegetables.

The flat-stackable design withstands humidity and long-distance shipping while remaining fully recyclable, as highlighted by Mondi Corrugated Turkey’s sales director Metin Morhayim.
