GERMANY – British sustainable packaging and paper company Mondi has partnered with easy2cool to create an e-commerce paper packaging solution for shipping fresh and frozen food products.
As part of this collaboration, Mondi has provided its recyclable ‘FunctionalBarrier Paper’ to enhance easy2cool’s ‘paperfloc Eco-Liner’ bag.
easy2cool invented its new Eco-Liner bag using shredded recycled paper and is designed for insulating cold products and keeping contents inside frozen or chilled for up to 48 hours.
Before its deal with Mondi, easy2cool used monopolyethylene to create the outer layer of the insulation material used in the bag.
easy2cool’s founder and general manager Marco Knobloch said: “We have trialed a number of different barrier papers, but chilled and frozen products have quite specific requirements and Mondi’s FunctionalBarrier Paper meets all our requirements.
“Customers using corrugated boxes can save up to 70% of the costs associated with the previous option of a polystyrene box, thanks to the reduced storage space used by new foldable solutions.”
Knobloch explained that another solution in easy2cool’s portfolio is combining a Mondi corrugated box with paperfloc insulation and its EasyAkkus product, to make a disposable cooler box that delivers reliable cooling for four days.
The latest partnership further signifies that easy2cool can now deliver its products in responsibly sourced packaging, which is made using renewable resources, in the form of insulated liners or pouches within a corrugated box.
Mondi said that its FunctionalBarrier Paper helps completely seal the packaging while offering a strong and shock-absorbent outer layer to keep the contents inside the pack safe.
It also prevents condensation moisture, which occurs naturally during the insulation process, from reaching the insulated material.
Mondi Functional Paper Industry Group manager Thomas Lunz added: “By using our FunctionalBarrier Paper, easy2cool can work towards its targets of using resources efficiently to deliver protection of temperature-sensitive goods anytime, anywhere.
“While the original application was developed for fresh and frozen food, the solution can also be used for pet food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.”
Recently, Mondi expanded its Functional Barrier Paper range through investments in scaling up its product capacity on production lines, new technology and equipment to support customers with more environmentally sustainable packaging solutions.
Furthermore, the company expanded its paper packaging range to IQ Grass + packaging. The solution combines up to 30% grass fiber and 70% FSC or PEFC-certified fresh fiber pulp.
