ITALY – Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, held a groundbreaking ceremony today in Duino, Italy. The ceremony marked the start of its €200 million (US$217m) investment in the mill acquired in January 2023.
The facility’s existing paper machine is being converted into a high-quality recycled containerboard machine.
This transformation will create job opportunities for current and potential employees, foster partnerships with local stakeholders, and contribute to the region’s overall economic development.
The new machine is expected to start operations in 2025 and will be capable of producing 420,000 tonnes of recycled containerboard for sustainable packaging solutions. It will also be Mondi’s widest recycled paper machine, at 8.5 meters.
The mill will source materials locally wherever possible to support the local economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This strategy aims to shorten transport distances and strengthen supply chain resilience.
“We are excited about the progress of the Duino investment project and the opportunity it provides our growing packaging business,” said Andrew King, CEO of Mondi Group.
“This containerboard machine will strengthen our backward integration and provide us with security of supply to better serve our customers.”
Markus Gärtner, CEO of Mondi Corrugated Packaging, added, “Our investment in Duino allows us to meet the increasing demand for sustainable solutions across Central Europe, the Mediterranean area, and the local Italian market.
“The project team is currently preparing for the upcoming construction works, which include a new recycled fiber plant, wastewater treatment plant, and the associated infrastructure and warehousing.”
Mondi has recently collaborated with Meurer to replace plastic shrink film with a secondary kraft paper packaging solution.
This recyclable solution is compatible with existing machinery and offers high strength, puncture resistance, and stretchability. It is ideal for grouped packaging applications and compliant with upcoming regulatory requirements in Europe.
Additionally, Mondi will present its renewable packaging and paper solutions from its PERGRAPHICA, IQ GRASS+ Packaging, and IQ Board brands at the touchpoint packaging (tpp) forum at drupa 2024, held from May 28 to June 7 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
These papers are particularly suited for luxury packaging applications and personalization, such as laser engraving.
