SPAIN – UK packaging company, Mondi has partnered with Noel Alimentaria to pack its rebranded range of sliced plant-based food in Mondi’s PerFORMing paper-based tray.
According to Mondi, the trays can be molded and customized to fit a variety of different-sized food products, making them perfect for shallow food trays. It has a high symmetrical stretch for uniform formability.
PerFORMing’s effective barrier defense against moisture and oxygen keeps the food fresh throughout the storage and distribution processes, claims Mondi.
Mondi sales & business development director Falk Paulsen said: “By working very closely with Noel Alimentaria from the outset, we were able to ensure we delivered the best possible option for the entire range of meat and meat-free products, using a tray made from renewable and responsibly sourced material that still provides maximum protection for the goods.”
According to Mondi, the tray has reduced plastic content as they are made of 80% paper as opposed to the industry standard of 100% plastic.
Additionally, the tray is designed for recycling and has cleared the recyclability tests by the German institute Papiertechnische Stiftung.
Noel Alimentaria corporate marketing director Maria Sánchez added: “We deliver our premium foods across Europe, so the right packaging is essential, in order to maintain the freshness of the products properly and protect them.
“At the same time, sustainability is on top of our agenda, and it was a pleasure to work so closely with Mondi to find the most suitable solution.
“We were able to run the new paper-based trays on our existing machinery and will now be using the same solution for our further ranges of ham and other meat products.”
Early last month, the UK packaging company helped Spanish firm Angulas Aguinaga switch to recyclable paper-based packaging for its Krissia brand chilled surimi sticks.
Mondi was able to create a solution that would be genuinely fit for purpose, protecting the chilled product while significantly reducing plastic – eliminating up to 20 tonnes of plastic every year.
Mondi’s FunctionalBarrier Paper is made from renewable and certified resources, responsibly sourced and delivers a range of benefits.
The strong and tear-resistant kraft base paper is fully converted in-house by Mondi to ensure customized barrier protection of the food and sealability of the packaging.
