INDIA – Mother Dairy has launched India’s first naturally degradable milk pouch in Delhi-NCR through its Cow Milk variant, with over four years of research enabling a proprietary technology that converts the packaging into bioavailable wax consumed by soil microbes within a few years, leaving no microplastics or residues.
The packaging, rolled out on World Environment Day 2026, addresses India’s staggering plastic waste burden where more than 100 million milk pouches are discarded daily, generating nearly 150,000-200,000 tonnes of low-density polyethylene waste annually.
The pouch has been independently tested in an NABL-accredited laboratory under ISO 17556, OECD 208, ISO 11268-1, ISO 11268-2 and IS 3025 standards for biodegradability, eco-toxicity and heavy metal content.
Importantly, Mother Dairy has committed to absorbing the increased input costs, ensuring no price hike for consumers.
How Wax Conversion Technology Prevents Fugitive Plastic from Escaping Recycling
The packaging uses a proprietary degradation technology developed over more than four years in collaboration with a European research company.
When the pouch ends up in soil, it converts into a bioavailable wax that microbes then consume and break down into natural elements, leaving behind no plastics or harmful residues.
Unlike conventional plastics that persist for centuries, the pouch is designed to degrade naturally in soil within a few years.
Mother Dairy Managing Director Jayatheertha Chary stated that while the milk pouches will continue to remain recyclable, the key differentiator lies in their ability to degrade into natural elements, addressing the challenge of fugitive plastic that escapes formal collection and recycling systems.
Dr. Meenesh Shah, Chairman of NDDB and Mother Dairy, emphasized that the newly introduced packaging is designed to naturally degrade in soil within a few years rather than centuries, and importantly, this transition is undertaken without any impact on consumer milk prices.
Why Packaging Innovation Matters for India’s 36 Billion Pouches Annual Challenge
India, as the world’s largest milk producer, generates significant volumes of plastic waste from flexible milk pouches annually, with industry estimates suggesting over 36 billion pouches discarded every year.
Mother Dairy sells approximately 5.5 million litres of milk per day across multiple states and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board.
The Cow Milk package is a pillow-style flexible pouch in white and pink, carrying the Mother Dairy brand mark in the company’s signature blue shield, with the updated pack now including a sustainability claim prominently printed at the base. T
he company plans to scale the use of this packaging into more products soon.
The innovation is designed to remain stable under storage and transportation conditions typical across India, including warm weather, with no effect on shelf life, taste or quality.
