SOUTH AFRICA – The Plastics SA Academy for Learning and Development has introduced a groundbreaking Plastics Manufacturing Machine Setter apprenticeship program.

This National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Occupational Qualification Level 5 initiative is tailored to address the skills gap in the plastics manufacturing industry and drive the sector’s transformation.

Kirtida Bhana, Head of the Plastics SA Academy, highlights the years of dedication behind the program, “The programme reflects years of dedication to creating expertly curated and peer-reviewed training content.

“Investing in trade apprenticeships like this ensures a skilled workforce and positions South Africa as a global competitor in plastics manufacturing.”

The program focuses on three-volume manufacturing processes, equipping apprentices with specialized, cutting-edge expertise required to excel in plastics manufacturing.

This initiative can potentially transform the sector by addressing critical skills shortages, enhancing production efficiency, and driving innovation.

The apprenticeship could help South African companies enhance product quality, reduce operational downtime, and adopt advanced manufacturing technologies by fostering a pipeline of highly skilled machine setters.

This, in turn, strengthens the country’s position in the global plastics industry, attracting investment and creating job opportunities.

Empowering businesses and individuals

The program offers businesses a unique opportunity to upskill their employees, enabling them to achieve a trade qualification that distinguishes them in the market.

Bhana emphasizes the program’s impact on the industry, “By enrolling their staff members for ongoing training and skills development, businesses access industry-specific training material that guarantees quality and effectiveness from the outset.”

This structured, high-quality apprenticeship ensures that participants meet and exceed industry standards.

It supports South African businesses in meeting global manufacturing benchmarks, critical in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

A catalyst for economic growth

The Plastics Manufacturing Machine Setter apprenticeship is more than just a training program—it is a catalyst for long-term economic development.

As skilled graduates enter the workforce, they will contribute to enhanced productivity, innovation, and sustainability within the sector.

Moreover, by investing in local talent, the plastics industry can reduce reliance on imported expertise, further boosting South Africa’s economy.

This program underscores the critical role of vocational training in addressing unemployment, fostering industrial growth, and positioning South Africa as a leader in the global plastics sector.

The Plastics SA Academy’s initiative marks a significant step toward shaping a resilient, competitive, and innovative future for the country’s plastics manufacturing industry.
