EUROPE – US-based protective packaging manufacturer Pregis has launched its AirSpeed Ascent high-performance air cushioning system in the European Union (EU) markets.

The high-pressure air system has been designed to generate patented, square-pattern hybrid cushioning (HC) to offer more surface area to absorb shock for product protection.

According to the firm, HC is made from AirSpeed HC Renew film which contains a minimum of 30% post-consumer recycled material.

The Pregis mono-material (polyethylene) film was created as per the Circular Economy Flexible Packaging (CEFLEX) guidelines. CEFLEX aims to make flexible packaging circular in Europe by 2025.

Pregis said users of the AirSpeed Ascent will benefit from its ‘compact’ design, which saves floorspace, as well as its top speed of 30m/min.

The ergonomic Ascent has no exposed parts to safeguard packers and enables simple, one-person roll changeover to benefit its users.

Additionally, the Ascent is built with smart logic that recognizes and calibrates the best system settings when the film is placed into the device.

The load-and-go efficiency makes machine operations simpler and eliminates the chance for human mistakes, the packaging firm claimed.

Pregis air cushioning product manager Manon Canisius said: “As e-commerce retail and direct-to-consumer fulfillment have become mainstream, it’s more important for companies to pay attention to their damage rates, which can have a catastrophic impact on profits and the environment.

“Pregis’ AirSpeed Ascent meets volume demands while HC provides premium protection for high-value, breakable items, minimizing damage costs and enhancing customer experience.”

As per the firm, the system provides HC with improved air retention in comparison to other competitive options due to strong, reliable seals.

The system is suitable for use for heavier products in the automotive, industrial parts, home accessories, consumer electronics, and smaller equipment sectors.

In October last year, Pregis introduced its new Performance Flexibles Renew Series film solutions as part of its sustainable product portfolio.

According to the firm, the latest product in the Pregis Renew Series is intended for flexible packaging applications, including food, medical, pharmaceutical, and household consumer goods.

It is said to use advanced materials and recycled content that are specifically engineered to meet the needs of the client.
