Rapids Paper expands ECOVA barrier line for plastic reduction

USA – Rapids Paper + Packaging has commercially expanded its ECOVA portfolio, introducing heat-sealable functional barrier paper solutions that allow brands to reduce plastic across flexible packaging applications.

The new ECOVA Barrier line combines heat sealability with barrier performance tailored to individual applications, enabling paper-based formats to deliver the production and converting performance required for real-world packaging. 

The portfolio comprises heat-sealable and functional barrier paper packaging solutions, giving brands alternatives to conventional plastic laminates across categories where grease, moisture and oxygen resistance are essential. 

Specialty papermakers have increasingly positioned functional coated papers as drop-in replacements for multilayer films, provided seal integrity and barrier thresholds match incumbent formats.

Paper Formats Face Demanding Performance Thresholds

Flexible packaging presents a persistent challenge for paper substitution because pouches, wrappers and sachets must withstand forming, filling and sealing at speed while protecting contents through distribution. 

Paper lacks the inherent barrier properties of polymer films, requiring coatings or treatments that deliver oil, water and gas resistance without compromising recyclability. 

Heat sealability adds a further requirement, since the substrate must bond reliably under pressure and temperature on high-speed lines. 

ECOVA’s positioning addresses these combined demands, targeting brands seeking to reduce plastic content without reformulating production processes or accepting reduced shelf life.

The expansion responds to tightening regulatory frameworks, including the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which penalises hard-to-recycle formats through extended producer responsibility fees. 

Fibre-based flexible packaging that passes through paper recycling streams can qualify for lower fee bands and maintain market access under Grade A classifications. 

Brands across food, personal care and household categories have accelerated trials of paper alternatives as a result, though many remain constrained by performance gaps in high-barrier applications.
