ResponsibleGlass launches consultation on global sustainability standard for glassmaking

GLOBAL – ResponsibleGlass has released the first full draft of its International Standard for Glassmaking, opening a 60-day public consultation aimed at establishing a global sustainability, certification and labelling framework for the glass manufacturing industry.

The consultation runs from 20 July to 18 September 2026, inviting manufacturers, suppliers, brands, recyclers, sustainability experts and other stakeholders to review the proposed standard and submit feedback before the document is finalized.

According to ResponsibleGlass, the draft has been developed by its board, management team and industry stakeholders in line with the organization’s International Standards Development Procedures. It also incorporates feedback received during consultations on preliminary proposals issued earlier this year.

The proposed framework is intended to provide a comprehensive benchmark for responsible glass production, covering environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance across the glass value chain.

Among its key provisions are requirements relating to corporate governance, anti-corruption measures, legal compliance, management systems, transparency and sustainability reporting.

The draft also establishes responsible sourcing principles for raw materials, including mined, synthetic and recycled feedstocks, as well as energy procurement practices designed to support more sustainable manufacturing.

Environmental performance forms a major component of the proposed standard, with requirements addressing greenhouse gas emissions, water stewardship, biodiversity protection, waste management and industrial emissions.

On the social front, the framework outlines expectations for occupational health and safety, labour rights, human rights protections and engagement with local communities, reflecting growing stakeholder expectations for responsible business practices throughout manufacturing supply chains.

The draft also introduces sustainability-by-design principles that encourage manufacturers to consider product performance throughout the entire lifecycle, including recyclability, circularity and end-of-life recovery.

Supporting documentation released alongside the draft includes a glossary of technical terms, a bibliography and preliminary information outlining future chain-of-custody and sustainability claims requirements that will underpin the certification system.

ResponsibleGlass said all comments received by the September 18 deadline will be reviewed by its Secretariat before being published following the consultation period.

Stakeholder feedback will inform preparation of a second draft scheduled for release in 2027, while the final international standard is expected to be ratified in 2028.

Established in 2025 as a not-for-profit organization, ResponsibleGlass brings together participants from across the global glass value chain, including glass manufacturers, raw material suppliers, recyclers, brand owners, sustainability specialists and civil society organizations.

The initiative reflects growing efforts across the packaging industry to establish harmonized sustainability standards that improve transparency, responsible sourcing and circularity.

As regulators, brand owners and consumers increasingly demand independently verified environmental and social performance, industry-led certification frameworks are expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting responsible manufacturing and strengthening confidence in sustainable packaging materials such as glass.
