At the heart of Schwan’s new offering is the replacement of traditionally used acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and other styrenics with recyclable alternatives.

GERMANY – Schwan Cosmetics, a leading German manufacturer and supplier to global beauty brands, has introduced a new line of styrene- and ABS-free packaging solutions designed to support the industry’s shift toward more sustainable materials.
The innovation, driven by its patent-pending FLX-Technology, anticipates upcoming European Union packaging restrictions and offers brands a seamless, cost-efficient path toward compliance.
At the heart of Schwan’s new offering is the replacement of traditionally used acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and other styrenics with recyclable alternatives, primarily polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP).
These materials are engineered to perform under the demands of cosmetics packaging, preserving the aesthetic appeal and formulation integrity brands require, without incurring the cost or usability drawbacks often associated with eco-friendly packaging.
FLX-Technology is already available across several pencil format products, including the Głowy Blush Stick, Boosting Peptide Liner, and Skin-Loving High Precision Brow Liner.
According to Schwan, these new packs are composed of up to 92% recyclable material and are free of styrene, with minor exceptions like polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), used only where high mechanical performance is essential.
“Incorporating sustainable materials should not mean compromising on design, brand experience, or cost-efficiency,” said Corinna Zeidler, Director of Brand Management at Schwan.
“With FLX, we enable beauty brands to switch to recyclable, regulation-compliant packaging without modifying artwork, tooling, or filling lines.”
The move aligns with the EU’s Single-Use Plastics Directive and 2030 circular economy goals, which require all packaging on the market to be reusable or recyclable.
As extended producer responsibility (EPR) frameworks and retailer sustainability requirements further restrict hard-to-recycle materials, industry pressure to transition away from styrenics is intensifying.
Schwan’s FLX solution arrives as a proactive answer to these shifting dynamics.
“We’re urging brands not to wait until the 2030 deadline,” Zeidler emphasized.
“Recyclates will be in high demand, but limited in supply. Companies that act now, through strategic partnerships, will be best positioned to secure their materials and remain compliant.”
The initiative also reinforces Schwan’s leadership in sustainability, recently validated by its receipt of the EcoVadis Platinum Medal, awarded to the top 1% of companies for sustainability performance in environment, labor, ethics, and procurement.
Tomás Espinosa, CEO of Schwan Cosmetics, underscored the company’s broader mission, “We aim to make sustainability scalable, affordable, and competitive, whether we’re partnering with luxury houses or indie beauty innovators.”
By simplifying the transition to mono-material design, eliminating the need for additional sealing components, and maintaining existing product dimensions, FLX-Technology represents a crucial step forward in sustainable cosmetics packaging, one that balances functionality, compliance, and consumer experience without compromise.
