Siegwerk unveils HorizonNOW 2030 to accelerate sustainable packaging innovation

The updated strategy sets measurable targets across procurement, operations and product development, reinforcing the company’s sustainability-led value proposition.

GERMANY – Siegwerk has launched HorizonNOW 2030, the next phase of its sustainability agenda, aimed at strengthening its position as a leading enabler of sustainable packaging solutions.

Building on its HorizonNOW strategy introduced in 2021, the updated framework outlines a series of ambitious and measurable targets to be achieved by 2030.

The initiative is closely aligned with the company’s broader “FORMULA 2030” business strategy, which seeks to further embed responsible practices across the entire value chain.

According to CEO Nicolas Wiedmann, sustainability is central to how the company creates value for its customers.

He noted that HorizonNOW 2030 connects every aspect of Siegwerk’s operations to a sustainable packaging future, supporting both responsible growth and innovation.

At the core of the new agenda are three focus areas, sustainable procurement, sustainable operations and sustainable products, supported by eight clearly defined goals.

In procurement, Siegwerk aims to reduce high-risk suppliers by 95% from a 2024 baseline and cut Scope 3 emissions by 25% compared to 2020 levels.

Within operations, the company is targeting a 60% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions, alongside a 10% reduction in waste relative to production volumes.

Additional objectives include achieving a Total Incident Rate below 1.0 and increasing female representation in leadership roles to 30%.

On the product front, the company is placing strong emphasis on circularity and transparency. By 2030, Siegwerk aims for 65% of its product portfolio, by volume, to enable circular packaging.

It also plans to introduce a comprehensive, data-driven product assessment framework covering circularity, carbon footprint and product safety.

Alina Marm, Head of Global Sustainability at Siegwerk, said the programme translates the company’s sustainability ambitions into actionable priorities.

She emphasised that responsible sourcing, sustainable production and circular product innovation are key to supporting customers in achieving their own environmental goals.

The company’s efforts have already gained external recognition, including a Gold Medal rating and a Sustainability Achievement Award for “Best New Program” from EcoVadis, underscoring the credibility of its sustainability roadmap.

Siegwerk’s latest move reflects a wider shift across the global packaging value chain, where material suppliers, converters and brand owners are increasingly aligning around science-based targets and circular economy principles.

Ink and coating manufacturers, in particular, are playing a critical role in enabling recyclability, reducing environmental impact and ensuring compliance with evolving regulations.

Across Europe and beyond, companies are investing in low-migration inks, de-inking technologies and bio-based formulations to support circular packaging systems.

At the same time, collaboration between stakeholders, from raw material suppliers to recyclers, is intensifying, as the industry works toward scalable, closed-loop solutions.

With HorizonNOW 2030, Siegwerk is positioning itself at the forefront of this transition, leveraging innovation, partnerships and measurable targets to drive long-term impact across the packaging ecosystem.
