Boxon launches first food-contact approved rPET Big Bags across MEA

Each two-kilogram bag consumes approximately 50 recycled PET bottles, transforming waste that might otherwise clog landfills into valuable industrial packaging.

MEA – Boxon has unveiled a new line of Big Bags made from recycled PET bottles, marking the first time recycled bulk packaging has received approval for direct food contact across the Middle East and Africa region.

The Sweden-based packaging specialist will roll out the rPET Big Bags targeting food, chemical, and industrial sectors facing growing pressure to reduce environmental footprints while maintaining strict safety standards.

According to Florence Abgrall, Boxon’s business unit manager, companies today need packaging solutions that support both compliance and operational efficiency, and these bags deliver exactly that.

By the Numbers: Performance Meets Sustainability

The numbers tell a compelling story. Compared to traditional virgin polypropylene Big Bags, the rPET version slashes carbon emissions by up to 50 percent.

Each two-kilogram bag consumes approximately 50 recycled PET bottles, transforming waste that might otherwise clog landfills into valuable industrial packaging.

Performance hasn’t taken a back seat to sustainability.

The bags boast improved UV resistance, higher abrasion resistance, and better form stability during transport compared to conventional options.

Temperature tolerance spans a remarkable -20°C to 140°C, making them suitable for everything from frozen ingredients to hot-filled materials.

Regulatory Winds at Their Back

The launch arrives as global packaging regulations tighten.

Many MEA countries are developing extended producer responsibility frameworks and recycled content mandates.

Boxon’s rPET Big Bags position customers ahead of these curves, offering a drop-in solution that meets tomorrow’s requirements today.

Printing and Traceability Advantages

Beyond environmental bragging rights, the bags deliver operational wins.

The rPET material enables sharper print quality than traditional woven polypropylene, facilitating clearer markings, improved traceability, and better control in regulated supply chains.

The slightly shinier appearance of rPET fabric also produces a superior finish for branding and product information.

Building on a Decade of Innovation

This isn’t Boxon’s first dance with circular bulk packaging.

The company has offered rPET Big Bags since at least 2019, when it began converting PET bottles collected from various regions into industrial packaging.

PET’s natural UV stability means the bags require no additional UV treatment, unlike polypropylene alternatives.

The industrial bulk packaging sector has long relied on virgin polypropylene for its combination of strength and cost-effectiveness.

Boxon’s rPET Big Bags challenge that status quo, demonstrating that recycled materials can match—and in some areas exceed, the performance of virgin alternatives.

For food manufacturers and industrial processors across MEA, the arrival of food-contact approved recycled bulk packaging represents a tangible step toward circular supply chains.

No longer must sustainability goals compete with safety requirements. With Boxon’s innovation, they finally align.
