New polyethylene label films combine print-on-demand capabilities with mono-material compatibility to support flexible packaging and PPWR compliance.

GERMANY – Sihl has expanded its digital label portfolio with the launch of a new range of polyethylene (PE) label films featuring aqueous (AQ) inkjet coatings, providing label converters with greater flexibility for print-on-demand production while supporting the industry’s shift toward recyclable mono-material packaging.
According to the company, the new portfolio marks the first application of aqueous inkjet technology on PE film labels, broadening substrate options for converters seeking high-quality digital printing solutions for flexible packaging applications.
The PE films have been developed for highly conformable labeling applications, allowing labels to wrap smoothly around curved, squeezable and small-diameter containers without wrinkling or lifting.
Their lower rigidity compared with conventional biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) label materials makes them particularly suitable for packaging formats requiring greater flexibility.
The new product range comprises four coating variants tailored to different end-use requirements.
These include IHG1 Gloss for high-gloss premium graphics, IG1 Satin for a satin finish, ZM1 Matt BS5609 for outdoor applications requiring water and chemical resistance, and IM1 Matt Universal, a versatile option for a broad range of indoor labeling applications.
Sihl said the expanded facestock portfolio enables converters and brand owners to take advantage of print-on-demand digital production while improving compatibility with mono-material packaging systems.
The launch also addresses the growing focus on compliance with the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which encourages packaging designs that improve recyclability and material recovery.
By pairing PE labels with PE containers, manufacturers can simplify recycling streams and support circular packaging objectives.
“By expanding the facestock portfolio to include PE base films with an AQ inkjet coating, Sihl offers maximum flexibility and opens up new, future-proof possibilities for the label industry,” the company said.
The introduction reflects broader trends in the label and packaging sectors, where digital printing technologies are enabling shorter production runs, faster product launches and greater customization while reducing inventory requirements and material waste.
At the same time, packaging designers are increasingly adopting mono-material solutions to improve recyclability and meet evolving regulatory and sustainability requirements.
As consumer goods manufacturers continue to seek packaging that combines premium shelf appeal with environmental performance, innovations in label materials are becoming an important component of sustainable packaging design.
Developments in digital print technologies, recyclable substrates and high-performance coatings are expected to play a growing role in helping brands deliver packaging that balances functionality, aesthetics and circular economy objectives.
