Silafrica achieves 100% recyclable plastic packaging, calls for industry reflection at K2025

For 63 years, Silafrica has been part of this transformation, advancing sustainable packaging solutions across Africa.

KENYA – Regional packaging leader Silafrica has announced that it has achieved 100% recyclable plastic packaging across its product portfolio, marking a major milestone in its sustainability journey.

The company credited the achievement to close collaboration between its customers and in-house teams to redesign packaging for circularity while maintaining both performance and aesthetics.

Speaking in the context of the recently concluded K2025 exhibition in Düsseldorf, the world’s largest trade fair for plastics and rubber, Silafrica reflected on the evolving identity of the plastics industry and the growing call for circular design.

Unlike previous editions, this year’s K Fair appeared to lack a central theme, a fact that Silafrica suggests may reflect the uncertainty and transition facing the global plastics sector as it seeks to balance innovation, performance, and environmental responsibility.

Tracing the event’s roots back to 1952, Silafrica recalled that K Fair was originally known as “Wunder der Kunststoffe”, “The Miracle of Plastics”.

That spirit of innovation, the company noted, drove plastics to revolutionize industries ranging from healthcare and construction to mobility, fashion, electronics, and consumer goods.

For 63 years, Silafrica has been part of this transformation, advancing sustainable packaging solutions across Africa.

“Plastics remain an incredibly versatile and valuable material,” the company stated. “The real challenge lies not in the material itself, but in how we design, manufacture, use, reuse, and recycle it.

“By making circularity the core of our approach, we can protect both the planet’s health and the economy’s growth.”

As the global packaging industry intensifies efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, Silafrica highlighted the need for a data-driven comparison of plastics and alternative materials such as glass, aluminum, and paper.

When evaluated across their entire life cycles, including reuse and recycling, plastics often demonstrate lower GHG footprints, especially in transport and energy-intensive applications.

The company emphasized that collaboration and innovation will be key to unlocking the full circular potential of plastics.

With its fully recyclable portfolio, Silafrica says it is ready to lead that charge, working with partners and customers to build a sustainable packaging future for Africa and beyond.
