SWEDEN – Stora Enso, a leading global provider of renewable solutions for packaging, paper, and biomaterials, has announced a strategic partnership with Enkei, a Swedish design startup dedicated to creating sustainable products.
Together, the two companies are developing innovative packaging solutions that prioritize both environmental sustainability and product protection.
Enkei’s handcrafted designer table lamp, the Reminder (001), presented a unique packaging challenge. Made from discarded materials, the lamp required a solution that could protect its delicate design while maintaining sustainability and aesthetics.
Stora Enso’s Papira foam, a biobased and biodegradable material made from wood fibers, proved to be the ideal choice.
Papira offers excellent shock-absorbing qualities, ensuring the safe transport of the Reminder lamp. Combined with Stora Enso’s corrugated board, the packaging solution is both robust and sustainable.
This collaboration not only protects the lamp but also aligns with Enkei’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.
“We have extremely high requirements when it comes to sustainability. At the same time, we strive to make the sustainable alternative attractive, which is why high-quality design is so important to us,” said Lovisa Sunnerholm, CEO of Enkei.
“We wanted a packaging solution that safely protected the lamp, was aesthetically pleasing, and left a low climate footprint.”
“The 5kg Reminder lamp, made from materials like fashion waste and a sustainable concrete base, was an exciting packaging design challenge,” said Paula Martirez, Business Development Manager at Stora Enso.
“This is a perfect example of how Papira can provide sustainable cushioning for fragile and heavy items without adding excessive weight and volume to the packaging, all while eliminating plastic.”
The partnership between Stora Enso and Enkei highlights the potential for innovative collaborations to drive sustainable practices in the packaging industry.
Last year, Stora Enso developed a new plastic-free transportation tray for Mester’s plants. The PureFiber™ Horti tray, made from formed fiber, reduces CO2 emissions by up to 80% compared to plastic alternatives.
Mester Grønn, with over 143 flower shops across Norway, hopes that the new tray will positively impact the overall environmental footprint of the entire industry.
Stora Enso developed the plastic-free tray based on three main criteria provided by Mester, one of which required the tray to retain its rigidity in both dry and humid conditions.
