Tetra Pak and Lactogal introduce Tetra Brik Aseptic carton for dairy products

PORTUGAL – Tetra Pak, in partnership with the Portuguese food products company Lactogal, has unveiled the Tetra Brik 200 Slim Leaf aseptic beverage carton, featuring a paper-based barrier.

This carton is crafted using approximately 80% paperboard, significantly raising the use of renewable content in the package to 90%.

Moreover, it slashes the overall carbon footprint by 33% and has received Carbon Neutral certification from the Carbon Trust.

Tetra highlighted that this aseptic carton has been specifically designed to facilitate distribution under ‘ambient’ conditions.

The launch signifies Tetra’s stride toward its overarching goal of producing a beverage carton solely from responsibly sourced renewable or recycled materials, creating a fully recyclable and carbon-neutral packaging alternative.

By 2025, Tetra aims to initiate large-scale production of this solution.

José Capela, President of Lactogal, stated, “Our collaboration with Tetra Pak is rooted in a mutual belief in the possibility of a more sustainable future.

“Joint innovation plays a pivotal role in this endeavor. Both our organizations are committed to an ambitious sustainability transformation, and achieving a 33% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions with this new carton, along with its Carbon Neutral certification by the Carbon Trust, marks a significant stride toward this objective.”

The Tetra Brik Aseptic 200 Slim Leaf carton’s launch followed successful commercial consumer testing conducted by both companies in 2022.

Tetra stated that this venture is part of a significant technology validation, encompassing around 25 million packages, currently underway in Portugal.

Ola Elmqvist, Executive Vice President of Tetra Packaging Solutions, remarked, “This development represents a pivotal milestone in our continuous effort to design beverage cartons for recycling – a process that continues to lead the way in the paperization of packaging.

“Through our collaboration with Lactogal, we are demonstrating the advancement of sustainability in aseptic beverage cartons while upholding food safety standards and improving food accessibility.”

Last month, Tetra Pak, in collaboration with Clover, introduced a new packaging solution aimed at enhancing product differentiation.

The novel packaging, Tetra Fino Aseptic 100 Ultra MiM, boasts a unique square-shaped carton design that offers multiple advantages to both consumers and producers, promising enhanced product differentiation, convenience, and sustainability.
