Tetra Pak announces facility closure in Singapore in strategic shift

SINGAPORE – Tetra Pak, a leading provider of food packaging solutions, has announced its decision to close its Jurong facility in Singapore and consolidate production into other regional factories over the next 12 months.

This move is part of the company’s ongoing strategy to optimize its global manufacturing footprint, better serve customers, and adapt to evolving market dynamics.

While the Jurong facility has been operational since 1982, supplying customers in Singapore and serving as an export hub, changing market dynamics necessitate adaptation to maintain competitiveness.

Thus, the company is taking proactive steps to balance market demands, optimize its industrial footprint, and enhance operational cost efficiency.

Despite the facility closure, Tetra Pak remains committed to maintaining a strong business presence in Singapore, with core operational functions such as business management, project centers, IT, human resources, finance, and marketing. The company will continue to support its global growth initiatives from Singapore.

Recognizing the impact on employees, Tetra Pak is committed to providing support beyond statutory requirements. Approximately 300 affected employees have been informed, with discussions scheduled throughout the week to explore new opportunities or provide outplacement support.

Tetra Pak is collaborating closely with the Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union (FDAWU) in Singapore, adhering to Tripartite guidelines and consulting them prior to the announcement.

To assist affected employees, Tetra Pak will leverage NTUC’s e2i, Workforce Singapore (WSG), and NTUC LearningHub (NTUC LHUB) to host a job fair and provide onsite training for career conversion.

Additionally, the company will support employees interested in applying for positions within Tetra Pak, both locally and regionally.

Tetra Pak expresses gratitude for the dedication and loyalty of its employees and values their integral role in its success story in Singapore.

Despite the facility closure, Tetra Pak remains committed to serving customers in Singapore and the region with high-quality products and reliable customer support.

Moreover, Tetra Pak will relocate its corporate office to a new, larger location in Singapore by the year’s end, demonstrating its continued investment in the region.

This move aligns with Tetra Pak’s broader strategic initiatives, including recent investments to enhance recycling capacity for carton packages in the European Union, supporting the proposed EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and contributing to the green transition of the food packaging sector.
