Tetra Pak champions sustainability in food and beverage supply chain

SWITZERLAND – Tetra Pak, a leader in food and beverage processing and packaging, spearheads sustainable practices by equipping its partners with technologies designed to cut resource consumption, enhance operational efficiency, and foster a greener future.

Built on four foundational pillars—Avoid, Recover, Optimize, and Neutralize—Tetra Pak’s solutions aim to promote sustainable food production.

The company’s technology minimizes material and energy consumption by avoiding unnecessary resource use, while its recovery solutions, such as heat and water recycling, enable the reuse of resources within production processes.

Additionally, Tetra Pak’s systems focus on optimizing efficiency by reducing machine wear and environmental impact and ultimately achieving emissions-neutral operations.

“These figures highlight the urgent need for modernization. Efficient equipment is essential to increase productivity and lower costs,” Forti notes.

With water scarcity an escalating global concern, Tetra Pak’s technologies also address waste reduction.

The food and beverage industry withdraws around 2.3 million liters of water per second from rivers, with nearly 50% of it used for cleaning.

To mitigate this, Tetra Pak’s solutions optimize water use, promoting efficient, sustainable operations.

Tetra Pak’s equipment, such as pasteurizers, UHT treatment systems, and high-precision mixers, not only ensures production efficiency but also supports sustainability.

The Tetra Pak® Industrial Protein Mixer, for instance, reduces foam formation during protein powder mixing, cutting down on product loss and boosting efficiency.

In cheese production, the Encapt™ technology in Tetra Pak’s separators reduces energy consumption by up to 40% and water use by 20%, supporting more sustainable dairy production.

Advancing water-saving technologies

Tetra Pak’s membrane filtration systems further promote resource conservation, using nanofiltration and reverse osmosis to concentrate whey and recover water for reuse.

This technology, employed in cheesemaking, can save up to 200,000 liters of water daily—an invaluable benefit in water-scarce regions.
