FINLAND – UPM Raflatac, a leading provider of sustainable labeling solutions, has expanded its direct thermal (DT) linerless label range with the introduction of its new OptiCut WashOff solution.
Designed specifically for returnable and reusable plastic food containers, the OptiCut WashOff label is ideal for materials like PP, HDPE, and PET crates commonly used in food logistics.
With a focus on sustainability, this innovation meets the increasing need for eco-friendly plastic packaging solutions in response to evolving regulations and consumer expectations.
Customers can now purchase the OptiCut WashOff label, which is compatible with most direct thermal printers and weighing scales.
It provides superior washability, allowing for easy and residue-free adhesive removal in both industrial processes and home washing machines.
The label’s design incorporates the key features of the OptiCut linerless portfolio, including strong adhesion to various surfaces, a clean cut, and the flexibility to print and cut labels to any length.
Additionally, it minimizes maintenance costs and maximizes efficiency with an extended service cycle.
A notable highlight of the OptiCut linerless portfolio is its CarbonNeutral certification, achieved through collaboration with Climate Impact Partners.
The certification aligns with The CarbonNeutral Protocol, ensuring that any unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions from the product are offset through high-quality carbon credits.
This allows UPM Raflatac’s partners to confidently promote their printed labels as CarbonNeutral® certified, supporting sustainability initiatives.
“As more retailers, HORECA, and logistics companies pivot towards reusable and returnable containers, we’re excited to launch our wash-off solution for direct thermal printing,” said Andoni Rodriguez, Director of the Business Segment for Logistics, Retail, Office, & Linerless at UPM Raflatac.
“With the largest global distribution network for direct linerless products, we’re proud to offer our partners the OptiCut WashOff label, underscoring our commitment to innovation and our customers’ sustainability journeys.”
In addition to the OptiCut WashOff solution, UPM Raflatac recently partnered with Michelman to develop three recyclable, paper-based packaging solutions aimed at helping brands replace multi-material, non-recyclable packaging.
These innovations are designed to meet food contact standards and support brands’ sustainability goals amidst growing regulatory demands.
One solution combines UPM’s Solide Lucent base paper with Michelman’s water-based coatings to deliver high oxygen and moisture vapor barriers, ideal for protecting products like chocolate and coffee.
Another solution, optimized for frozen foods, utilizes UPM Asendo or UPM Asendo Pro barrier papers with next-generation, heat-sealable coatings for performance in low temperatures.
A third solution enhances resistance to water vapor and grease, using Michelman’s VaporCoat 2240 coating with UPM Asendo and UPM Asendo Pro papers. This makes it suitable for inner liners in corrugated packaging.
With these innovations, UPM Raflatac continues to pioneer sustainable labeling and packaging solutions that support brands transitioning to eco-friendly materials.
