Ball Beverage Packaging bets big on India as a strategic hub for Asia-Pacific growth

Ball’s investments over time have created a future-ready platform that combines scale, innovation, and sustainability to serve its customers.

INDIA – Ball Beverage Packaging is significantly deepening its commitment to India, positioning the country as a strategic manufacturing and innovation hub for Asia-Pacific, following back-to-back investments of nearly US$115 million across its Taloja and Sri City facilities.

The move underscores Ball’s confidence in India’s rapidly expanding beverage market and the growing role of aluminum cans in sustainable packaging.

According to Manish Joshi, regional commercial director – Asia, Ball Beverage Packaging India, India is no longer viewed purely as a high-growth consumption market.

“India is a strategic hub in Ball’s global roadmap,” he said, citing strong demand growth across beer, carbonated soft drinks, energy drinks and ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages, alongside rising premiumization and at-home consumption trends.

Dairy-based beverages, supported by retort technology, are emerging as a key growth segment.

The Sri City expansion is particularly notable, introducing retort-enabled aluminum can production, allowing heat-treated beverages such as flavored milk, RTD coffee and functional drinks to achieve extended shelf life without compromising taste or nutrition.

Additional backend investments will expand capacity across pack sizes including 500ml, 250ml and 185ml, establishing the site as a future-ready manufacturing base.

Together with the earlier expansion at Taloja, the investments substantially strengthen Ball’s local supply chain, reducing dependence on imports and enabling faster, more reliable service for Indian beverage brands.

The localization of advanced can formats also supports categories that previously relied on overseas supply, while integrating India more closely into Ball’s global manufacturing network.

The expansion comes as India’s beverage packaging landscape evolves rapidly. Homegrown and multinational brands are increasingly shifting from PET and glass to aluminum, attracted by its lightweighting potential, premium appeal and near-infinite recyclability.

Recent launches of milkshakes, RTD coffee and energy drinks in aluminum cans by Indian and global brands reflect this shift, mirroring similar transitions seen in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

Sustainability is central to Ball’s India strategy. Both Taloja and Sri City incorporate Zero Liquid Discharge systems, energy-efficient heat-pump technology and reduced logistics emissions through localized production.

Ball is also working with recyclers and supply chain partners to strengthen aluminum collection and recovery in line with India’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework, supporting its global ambition of a 90% recycling rate by 2030.

Industry analysts note that India’s aluminum can market is poised for strong double-digit growth over the next decade, driven by functional beverages, premiumization and rising environmental awareness.

Against this backdrop, Ball’s investments signal a long-term play: building scale, resilience and advanced capability in India, while using the country as a springboard to serve wider Asia-Pacific demand.

As packaging becomes a strategic differentiator for beverage brands, Ball’s India-focused expansion positions aluminum cans at the centre of the country’s next phase of beverage innovation and sustainability-led growth.
