August Market Watch: PET prices diverge across regions as packaging demand shifts

With sustainability a persistent structural driver, recycled PET is growing in packaging and textiles; regional supply and demand rest on collection infrastructure, recycling capacity, regulation, and brand pledges.

GLOBAL – Global polyethylene terephthalate prices have recorded mixed regional movements in August 2026, with Northeast Asia, Africa and North America posting gains while Europe, India and Southeast Asia registered declines.

PET prices in Northeast Asia reached US$1.14 per kilogram in August, rising 10.7 percent, the strongest regional increase.

Stronger demand from beverage packaging and textile applications encouraged procurement, while higher upstream costs and tighter availability supported supplier pricing. Improved downstream buying interest, production adjustments and regional trade conditions reinforced the upward trend.

Africa followed with prices reaching US$1.09 per kilogram, up 5.8 percent, as stronger packaging and beverage demand supported purchasing activity. Limited regional production capacity and elevated logistics costs further bolstered prices.

North America Records Highest Benchmark

North America posted the highest PET price at US$1.51 per kilogram, climbing 7.1 percent.

Strong beverage packaging and industrial demand supported procurement, while higher feedstock and operating costs increased supplier offers.

Firm downstream requirements, controlled availability and elevated logistics expenses strengthened market conditions.

Europe Experiences Sharpest Correction

Europe recorded the steepest decline, with prices falling 12.0 percent to US$1.10 per kilogram.

Softer packaging demand and improved availability reduced purchasing pressure, while lower feedstock costs eased production expenses.

Cautious inventory management, competitive supplier offers and subdued downstream consumption contributed to the correction.

India declined 0.9 percent to US$1.08 per kilogram, as balanced domestic availability and cautious procurement limited upward pressure.

Southeast Asia registered the lowest price at US$0.96 per kilogram, down 4.0 percent, weighed by softer downstream packaging demand and competitive regional offers.

Feedstock and Recycling Trends Shape Outlook

The PET market remains closely linked to purified terephthalic acid and monoethylene glycol pricing, since these raw materials form the foundation of PET production.

Changes in upstream feedstock costs can quickly affect resin manufacturers’ production economics.

Sustainability remains an important structural theme, with recycled PET increasingly incorporated into packaging and textile supply chains.

Regional demand and availability depend on collection infrastructure, recycling capacity, regulatory requirements and brand commitments.

Long-term consumption is expected to be shaped by greater use of recycled PET, improvements in bottle-to-bottle recycling and higher recycled-content requirements, which will influence the balance between virgin and recycled resin.
