POLAND – Carlsberg Poland has partnered with multinational packaging company DS Smith to trial its innovative Round Wrap packaging solution.
This trial is applied to popular Carlsberg beer product ranges, including Carlsberg, Garage, and Somersby.
The DS Smith Round Wrap, utilizing Arcwise technology, is fully recyclable and designed to significantly reduce pallet shipments’ environmental impact. Carlsberg Poland anticipates this packaging solution will save up to 224 tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) annually.
The Round Wrap’s fiber-based design with rounded corners enhances protection during transportation and provides new branding opportunities.
Its rounded shape increases brand visibility, offering space to display identity and illustrations on the corners and the entire 360-degree side surface of the packs.
A survey by DS Smith and Toluna indicated that consumers favor the Round Wrap’s ‘enhanced wraparound design’ for its standout shelf appeal.
DS Smith’s design team employed the company’s proprietary Circular Design Metrics (CDM) tools to assess the sustainability impact of the new packaging solution for Carlsberg Poland.
These tools use eight key indicators, including carbon footprint and materials utilization, to measure and enhance the sustainability performance of packaging designs.
Reinier Schlatmann, Regional Managing Director of DS Smith’s East Europe packaging division, expressed pride in the collaboration: “We are proud to partner with Carlsberg Poland for a trial launch of the DS Smith Round Wrap.
“This sustainable packaging innovation was developed using our Circular Design Metrics, offering durability, supply chain advantages, and branding opportunities.
“This aligns with our company-wide commitment to Redefining Packaging for a Changing World and our Now & Next Sustainability strategy and mission as we help our customers design out waste and move towards a circular economy.”
Additionally, DS Smith recently partnered with Bioenzymatic Fuel Cells (BeFC) to accelerate the development of smart packaging solutions, emphasizing its £100 million (US$125.18m) investment in research and development (R&D) and innovation announced in 2021.
This collaboration aims to advance the circular economy and reduce packaging’s environmental impact.
Magnus Renman, Group R&D Director at DS Smith, highlighted the potential of combining corrugated packaging with smart technology to reduce waste across the supply chain significantly.
He emphasized the importance of innovative, circular solutions in addressing inefficiencies, costs, and carbon emissions, with BeFC’s transformative technology poised to revolutionize waste management in various industries.
