Coca-Cola partners with Egypt’s Ministry of Environment to reduce waste in water canals

Egypt – The Coca-Cola Company in Egypt has entered into a new partnership with the Waste Management Regulatory Authority (WMRA) under the Ministry of Environment to launch a waste collection initiative aimed at reducing pollution in Egypt’s critical water canals.

The project is part of a broader national effort led by the Ministry of Environment in collaboration with WMRA and the Consultant Engineering Office (CEO) to combat waste accumulation and promote more efficient recycling systems across the country.

Under this partnership, Coca-Cola will provide waste collectors with tricycles to facilitate waste collection in key pollution hotspots across Qalyubia and Giza.

The initiative will operate under the supervision of WMRA and local authorities to ensure effective waste management and integration into Egypt’s growing recycling value chain.

The initiative forms part of Coca-Cola’s global sustainability commitments, particularly its goal to collect and recycle 70–75% of the equivalent bottles and cans it introduces into the market by 2035.

By working directly with local communities, the company aims to support Egypt’s Vision 2030 goals for sustainable development, the adoption of a circular economy, and environmental preservation.

Hanna Haddad, General Manager of The Coca-Cola Company in Egypt, said the project reflects the company’s long-term dedication to sustainability and community empowerment.

“We remain committed to helping create shared value for our business and the communities we serve,” Haddad said.

“Through collaboration with local and global partners, Coca-Cola will continue to expand design innovations, enhance collection models, and invest in infrastructure to help reduce packaging waste.”

Beyond environmental benefits, the initiative will also create local job opportunities by employing waste collectors and providing training on effective waste management practices.

The collected materials will contribute to Egypt’s recycling ecosystem, helping drive resource recovery and reduce landfill dependency.

Officials from the Ministry of Environment and WMRA emphasized that such public-private collaborations are crucial to addressing Egypt’s waste management challenges, particularly in urban and rural waterways that have suffered from years of unmanaged plastic and household waste.

The partnership between Coca-Cola and the Ministry underscores a growing trend in Egypt where private sector players are aligning their sustainability strategies with national environmental priorities to support cleaner communities and a more resilient circular economy.
