DS Smith appoints James Lomax as new Managing Director for UK & Ireland packaging division

He brings 20 years’ experience in the fast-moving consumer goods and packaging industries.

UK — DS Smith, the sustainable packaging solutions provider now under International Paper, has appointed James Lomax as managing director of its UK and Ireland packaging division. Lomax officially stepped into the role on 1 December 2025, succeeding Paul Clarke.

Lomax previously served as director of supply chain and operations for DS Smith’s Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) packaging division.

Over his eight-year tenure at DS Smith, he has held roles spanning sales, marketing, innovation and operations.

With more than 20 years of experience in fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and packaging, Lomax is recognized for steering business transformation and driving sustainability-focused growth.

Commenting on his appointment, Lomax said, “Following the integration with International Paper, we have embarked on a transformational journey – simplifying our organization and becoming a more efficient and agile operation to deliver superior customer experience.

“We thank Paul for his significant contribution to DS Smith and wish him every success in the future. We have a strong foundation, and I look forward to building on that as we deliver our growth agenda and create long-term value for our business and stakeholders.”

The leadership transition comes as DS Smith continues innovating across its fibre-based packaging portfolio.

In November 2025, the company introduced a recyclable fibre-based packaging solution for Austria’s Privatbrauerei Hirt, helping the brewer support its e-commerce expansion.

The design protects 0.5L and 0.75L glass bottles with shock-absorbing edges, cap and base securing features, and internal tabs, eliminating the need for plastic components.

In related developments, DS Smith recently unveiled a new line of 100% recyclable cardboard protective buffers created in collaboration with Dynamic Logistic Systems (DLS).

The solution replaces traditional Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) buffers used to safeguard industrial machine parts during shipping.

Featuring double-walled corrugated cardboard, reinforced side panels and custom-fit barriers, the buffers are designed to absorb shocks and maintain structural integrity over long-distance transport.

According to DS Smith, the new buffers offer a major logistics advantage: they require about 60% less storage and transport volume than foam-based alternatives, improving efficiency while supporting sustainability goals.

Lomax’s appointment signals DS Smith’s continued focus on operational agility, material innovation and fibre-based packaging solutions as it strengthens its position across the UK, Ireland and broader European markets.
