The DS Smith design means the packaging solution is suitable for products in bottles in a variety of different shapes and sizes.

AUSTRIA – DS Smith has partnered with Austria’s Privatbrauerei Hirt to introduce a custom fiber-based packaging system for the brewery’s new e-commerce platform.
The collaboration brings award-winning beers, lemonades, vinegars, and spirits, long favored as regional gifts, directly to consumers’ doorsteps in 0.5-liter and 0.75-liter glass bottles.
This initiative addresses the surge in interest for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options, with the packaging designed to safeguard bottles during storage and delivery.
The solution features shock-absorbing edges and securing tabs that target vulnerable spots like caps and bases, ensuring safe transit without any plastic parts.
Fully recyclable, it adapts to various bottle shapes and sizes, cutting costs by eliminating extra internal supports. Assembly proves straightforward, suiting the brewery’s wide product lineup efficiently.
Heimo Schader, managing director at Privatbrauerei Hirt, highlighted the packaging’s practical appeal.
“It combines functionality with design and assembles quickly while handling our diverse ranges,” he said.
Schader noted that the design leaves room for striking branding, creating a memorable unboxing moment for buyers accessing these high-quality items via the online shop.
Dieter Glawischnig, managing director of packaging at DS Smith Austria, emphasized the focus on material efficiency.
The team aimed to craft a lightweight option that delivers strong protection for luxury beverages amid the expanding e-commerce sector.
He added that the natural look, paired with precise white flexographic printing, makes the brewery’s identity stand out right away.
Adding to the momentum, Austria’s new deposit system for single-use beverage containers took effect on January 1, 2025, imposing a US$0.27 fee on plastic bottles and metal cans up to 3 liters.
Producers must register and label items with barcodes and symbols, targeting an 80% collection rate initially and 90% by 2027.
This measure recycles materials back into production, easing environmental strain from discarded packaging.
