Eviosys expands easy-open jar closure line for improved accessibility

SWITZERLAND – Eviosys has introduced a new 66 mm diameter lid to its Orbit jar closure range, designed to be opened effortlessly, catering to consumers with limited motor skills, children, and seniors.

These closures, initially launched in 2010, require minimal pressure to operate, making them user-friendly and accessible. The lid can be easily integrated into existing products without requiring new production lines or special jars.

The updated design significantly reduces the effort needed to open the jar, cutting opening torque by up to 50% compared to standard twist-off closures.

It allows users to simply press the ring, pop the inner panel, and open the lid with ease. The closure is also designed to be re-closed, prolonging shelf life and protecting jars during transit.

Orbit closures offer additional benefits, including enhanced resistance to abuse. The outer ring acts as a shock-absorbing bumper, protecting the jar’s seal from damage, while withstanding sterilization pressures.

In a consumer survey, Eviosys found that 43% of respondents were willing to pay more for products using Orbit closures, and 55% said they would consider switching brands to enjoy the convenience it offers.

Several brands, including France’s Bien Cultivés and Norway’s Orkla, have adopted the Orbit technology.

Fernando Baroja, CEO of Cidacos Group, praised the closure, noting its ease of use and the significant reduction in vacuum loss due to impacts during transportation and storage.

“We are very satisfied with the decision to integrate Orbit closures into our products and plan to expand their use across our portfolio,” Baroja stated.

Eviosys highlights the growing demand for more inclusive packaging, particularly in the global food industry.

Research indicates that 82% of consumers struggle to open traditional metal lids on glass jars, a challenge that is especially prevalent in Europe, where aging populations are increasing.

In related industry news, Aptar Closures recently launched a lightweight, sustainable disc top closure.

The Future Disc Top closure marks the first in a series of three-disc top dispensing solutions slated for global release this year, catering to beauty, personal care, and home care applications.

Crafted with e-commerce in mind, the Future Disc Top features a locking/unlocking ring that enhances security during transit, minimizing the risk of breakage or leaks.

Meanwhile, Berry Global Group introduced twist-top, spill-proof, easy-open jars for Grillo’s Pickles, emphasizing the industry’s shift towards more convenient and sustainable packaging solutions.

With continuous thread closures, these custom, nestable, and widely recyclable polypropylene (PP) jars provide a simple, mess-free opening process while emphasizing innovation and sustainability.
