NORTH AMERICA – Wyld, a prominent player in the North American edibles market, has joined forces with TIPA to employ home-compostable laminate in packaging legal edibles, taking decisive action to keep environmentally challenging, difficult-to-recycle single-use flexible plastics at bay.
This collaboration comes amidst the burgeoning growth of new adult-use markets, propelling the legal edibles industry toward a projected quadrupling by 2032, reaching an estimated value of US$37.1 billion.
As this market expansion unfolds, there is an escalating demand for sophisticated sustainable packaging that aligns with stringent safety and compliance standards while meeting Wyld’s elevated brand criteria.
The surge in demand for alternative packaging is primarily propelled by consumers and businesses seeking to diminish reliance on single-use flexible plastics, a pertinent concern given the U.S.’s staggering annual production of over 40 million tons of plastic waste, with a meager 6% undergoing recycling.
Wyld is set to utilize TIPA’s 608 home compostable laminate, recently introduced to North America for local production.
This laminate will be employed in crafting individual wrappers for Wyld’s edibles, as well as pouches and bags for external packaging. In 2024, Wyld will roll out products across the U.S. and Canada enveloped in TIPA’s innovative laminate.
The two-ply laminate seamlessly operates on conventional plastic packaging machinery, boasting a robust oxygen and moisture barrier that extends the shelf life of diverse packaged goods.
It complies with rigorous state-dependent regulations governing the packaging of legal edibles, featuring child-resistant seals, exceptional transparency, and white consistencies in various thicknesses.
Additionally, it holds TUV OK Home Compost certification, signifying its ability to decompose in home composters, yielding nutrient-rich soil and leaving behind no waste.
This strategic move marks TIPA’s entry into a novel market segment, following its recent expansion into local North American production of compostable packaging for the fashion and food industries.
For Wyld, it signifies another stride in transitioning away from petroleum-based plastic packaging towards compostable alternatives.
Rodrigo Castaneda, TIPA’s VP/GM North America, remarks, “This represents a noteworthy achievement in both companies’ commitment to environmental responsibility, emphasizing our dedication to meeting the evolving demands of sustainability-conscious consumers.
“The collaboration is poised to exert a positive impact not only on the edibles industry but also on the broader movement steering away from traditional single-use flexible plastics, all for the betterment of our planet.”
Kale Gray, Senior Brand Manager at Wyld, expresses excitement about incorporating this innovative, eco-friendly packaging solution into the product line, showcasing a proactive stance in reducing plastic waste.
Leveraging compostable materials, Wyld aims to contribute to a greener future and establish a new benchmark for sustainability within the edibles industry.
