This latest innovation sets new benchmarks for flexible packaging.
GERMANY – RKW Group, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of polyolefin-based film solutions, has unveiled its latest innovation in sustainable packaging solutions with the introduction of new films with an integrated ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) barrier.
The films, combined with the latest MDO-PE (Machine Direction Orientation – polyethlene) extrusion technology, offer recyclability and sustainability across several packaging formats and industries.
This latest innovation sets new benchmarks for flexible packaging.
RKW Group’s extended MDO-polyethylene (PE) product line, including films with an EVOH oxygen barrier, reportedly addresses the Consumers’ growing demand and impending global regulations.
According to RKW, MDO-PE films are combined with RKW ProTec sealing films to offer a recyclable and sustainable packaging alternative to conventional materials for various packaging formats and industries.
“As a manufacturer of high-quality plastic films, we are acutely aware of our responsibility. That’s why we continuously develop our product portfolio of sustainable mono-material solutions,” said Luc Hermans, Director of Sales Consumer Packaging.
“For example, we also offer Low-SIT sealing films with PCR (post-consumer recycled) content, which we can combine with MDO-PE films for various non-food applications.”
The RKW Horizon films are said to meet the high demands of flexible packaging manufacturers, offering tear resistance, clarity, gloss, print quality, and ease of processing. Additionally, they provide outstanding machinability on standard packaging machinery.
“With the new MDO-PE films with integrated EVOH barrier, our customers can use dedicated, special Low-SIT sealing films, as the barrier is already included in the print substrate,” explained Konrad Noniewicz, Director of Application Engineering and R&D.
“These new MDO films are ideally suited for coffee packaging when combined with a suitable sealing film. Traditional coffee packaging consists of different material composites and cannot be recycled. Our MDO-PE film with PE sealing film provides a recyclable mono-material packaging with equally good barrier properties. These films are also ideal as lidding or peel films.”
According to RKW, MDO-PE films can be used for various packaging formats, including stand-up pouches, side gusset bags, flow packs, sachets, and lidding films.
Furthermore, the films are also suitable for packaging products from sweets and snacks, coffee and tea, and frozen foods to non-food items such as pet food, personal care products, and cleaning and laundry detergents.
Last month, RKW Group presented its comprehensive portfolio of packaging solutions, with a focus on film solutions, at the ProPak event in Bangkok.
