Stahl introduces PPWR-compliant metallic coatings for packaging

NETHERLANDS – Stahl has unveiled its Senoprint portfolio of metallic coatings, designed to be de-inked and recovered through standard paper recycling streams while aligning with the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.

The range offers an alternative to conventional foil stamping, allowing customers to create metallic effects directly during the print run. 

Available in UV-based and water-based formulations, Senoprint meets worldwide requirements and supports packaging solutions with lower volatile organic compound emissions. 

The portfolio unites the established range previously known as LustreCoat under a single global brand.

Recyclability Addresses Regulatory Pressure

Stahl described the range as a more cost-effective and recyclable alternative to hot foil stamping and cold foil application, helping customers simplify production and achieve a mirror-like finish without the complexity of a separate foiling operation. 

Each metallic coating application is paired with a protective topcoat, developed in-house as a single system and engineered to preserve brilliance while providing robust resistance to abrasion, environmental factors and handling. 

The approach targets premium packaging and labelling applications where metallic finishes traditionally compromised recyclability.

Applications Span Multiple Printing Formats

Senoprint can be used for both paper and board across flexo, screen, sheetfed and narrow web printing applications. 

The range currently includes silver and gold finishes, with the option to add extra metallic colours through overprinting. 

This versatility allows converters to pursue decorative effects without investing in separate foiling equipment or accepting the waste streams associated with foil transfer processes.

Showcase Planned at Chicago Event

Stahl will present the Senoprint coatings at LOUPE Americas 2026 in Chicago from 15 to 17 September. 

The launch reflects broader momentum in sustainable coating development, as suppliers respond to tightening rules on packaging recyclability and material composition. 

Zerocircle recently revealed a heat-sealable hydrophobic coating for paper cups made from natural polymers, providing water and grease resistance for hot beverages without polyethylene lining or PFAS treatment. 

That product complies with the European Union’s Single Use Plastic Directive and the PPWR. 

Last month, UK company Kelpi announced that its seaweed-based biomaterial coating had been cleared for food contact by the US Food and Drug Administration, permitting its use on paper and board food packaging sold in the United States. 

Kelpi said the approval also validated the coating as suitable for personal care and cosmetics packaging.
