UFlex secures patent for tamper-evident reclosable packaging for large-format bags

New flexible packaging technology combines tamper detection, barrier protection and reclosability for pet food, pharmaceuticals and industrial products.

INDIA – Flexible packaging manufacturer UFlex has been granted an Indian patent for a reclosable packaging solution featuring an integrated tamper-evident mechanism and enhanced barrier properties, targeting large-format packaging used across the food, pharmaceutical and industrial sectors.

The patented innovation is designed for products that require repeated opening and resealing, including pet food, coffee, protein supplements, flour, pharmaceutical ingredients, fertilizers, chemicals and other industrial materials.

The packaging incorporates a thin protective layer beneath the zipper closure that must be removed or torn before the bag can be opened.

This creates a clear visual indication of any prior access, enabling consumers and retailers to identify package tampering before purchase.

In addition to its tamper-evident design, the zipper integrates barrier technology that allows the package to be securely reclosed after opening, helping protect contents from moisture, oxygen, gases and other environmental contaminants throughout the product’s lifecycle.

According to UFlex, the combination of tamper detection, secure reclosure and customizable barrier performance differentiates the solution from conventional reclosable flexible packaging currently available in the market.

“As products are increasingly sold in large-format packs, packaging must do much more than simply contain the product. It must protect product integrity throughout its lifecycle while giving consumers confidence that the packaging is secure and has not been opened before purchase,” said Jeevaraj Gopal Pillai, President of Flexible Packaging and New Product Development at UFlex.

He added that the innovation is particularly suited for products susceptible to tampering, substitution and counterfeiting, enabling brand owners to safeguard product authenticity while strengthening consumer trust and protecting brand reputation.

The company noted that products such as pet food and protein powders are often opened and resealed multiple times over several weeks, creating a need for packaging that preserves freshness while assuring users that the product remained unopened before first use.

UFlex said its patented design addresses these requirements through a single integrated packaging solution that combines security, convenience and long-term product protection.

The barrier properties can also be customized to meet the preservation needs of different products, eliminating the need for additional sealing processes and improving cost efficiency.

The patent reflects a broader industry trend toward value-added flexible packaging that incorporates anti-counterfeiting, product authentication and extended shelf-life features.

As manufacturers seek packaging that delivers both consumer convenience and enhanced product protection, innovations integrating intelligent closure systems and advanced barrier technologies are gaining momentum.

Earlier this year, UFlex also expanded its packaging technology portfolio by unveiling the CeruFlex 500 high-speed gravure printing machine, developed in collaboration with Italy’s Gravtech and launched during PlastIndia 2026, underscoring the company’s continued investment in advanced packaging manufacturing solutions.
