Securikett’s new heat-free tray sealing label replaces welded lids with VOID tamper evidence

AUSTRIA – Securikett has unveiled a multifunctional labeling technology that replaces conventional heat sealing for trays and cups with an automatically applied label, integrating VOID tamper evidence, ventilation holes, and viewing windows in a single construction.

The Austrian security-label specialist’s system seals trays using the label itself instead of a traditional welded lid, eliminating the need for heat-sealing equipment and reducing machinery and operational costs. 

The solution integrates structured adhesive coatings, built-in VOID technology, precisely applied silicone coatings, and custom die-cutting within one label. 

VOID Technology and Functional Openings

The tamper-evident seal immediately indicates if a package has been opened or tampered with through an integrated VOID effect that produces a visible and irreversible opening indication. 

Functional elements such as ventilation holes or viewing windows can be directly incorporated into the label, making it suitable for applications requiring product breathability or visibility, such as fresh produce or bakery items. 

The system can be applied automatically using labeling or dispensing systems, enabling faster processing compared to heat-sealing equipment. 

This modular approach allows brands to adapt the label for different product requirements without redesigning the entire package, reducing development time and costs for new packaging formats.

Vanessa Mitterer-Kling, Head of Research and Development at Securikett, explained that the company has combined multiple technologies so that they work together within a single label, creating a packaging solution that is not only tamper-evident but can also be efficiently integrated into existing production processes. 

She added that while tamper-evident security solutions have been used for years in cash transport pouches, this development now introduces comparable security mechanisms for tray and cup packaging for the first time. 

The technology builds on Securikett’s earlier work with structural coatings and functional label elements, including integrated viewing windows, technical openings, and ventilation holes. 

The system treats the label as a functional closure component whose bonding and non-bonding areas are engineered for a specific package, potentially providing manufacturers with greater flexibility when changing formats or adding functional openings.

The company expects the technology to be particularly attractive for food manufacturers seeking to eliminate heat-sealing equipment from their production lines while maintaining product integrity and shelf appeal.
