The course is aimed at those seeking skills in recycling methods.

INDIA – The Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) and the Plastics Packaging Research & Development Centre (PPRDC) have jointly introduced a specialized certificate program aimed at strengthening skills in plastics packaging, recycling technologies, and circular economy applications.
According to The Economic Times, the three-month course is designed for professionals seeking structured knowledge on material science, regulatory frameworks, and sustainable end-of-life solutions.
The curriculum covers 32 topics spread across 15 sessions, drawing on the expertise of more than 21 faculty members.
Participants will explore the technical characteristics of plastic packaging materials, current and emerging recycling methods, India’s evolving regulatory landscape, and extended producer responsibility (EPR) obligations.
The program also integrates practical components, industry site visits, laboratory work, and case-based projects, giving learners direct exposure to real-world challenges and innovations within the plastics value chain.
Eligibility extends to engineering graduates, diploma holders, working professionals, start-ups, and entrepreneurs.
The blended learning structure combines in-person teaching with online delivery to maximize accessibility for participants across India’s manufacturing hubs.
Industry stakeholders have responded positively to the new initiative. In a post on X, UFlex sustainability director and head of flexible packaging and new product development, Jeevaraj Gopal Pillai, welcomed the program, saying it comes at a critical time.
“The launch of this program is perfectly timed, as the industry is facing a widening skills gap during this shift,” he said.
“There is a strong need for professionals and entrepreneurs who understand both the fundamentals and technical aspects of recycling, as well as the strategic design of circular systems.”
The new program aligns with the wider industry push towards sustainable materials management.
Over the past year, India has tightened EPR enforcement, pushing FMCG and packaging companies to demonstrate higher levels of recycling, traceability, and waste recovery.
In parallel, major converters such as Cosmo First and Polyplex have expanded their recycling and PCR integration capacities, while state governments including Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have launched initiatives to curb single-use plastics and accelerate material recovery infrastructure.
Globally, skills development in circular packaging is emerging as a strategic priority. In 2025, the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will require mandatory recycled content thresholds, prompting similar training and certification programs by European institutes.
As India positions itself as a key manufacturing base for packaging materials, the IIP–PPRDC collaboration is expected to play a vital role in building the workforce needed for a more resource-efficient, compliant, and innovation-driven sector.
