ProAmpac collaborates with WMU to improve fibre-based packaging

The partnership is designed to enhance ProAmpac’s “Fiberization of Packaging” strategy.

USA – ProAmpac, a flexible packaging and material science company, has partnered with Western Michigan University (WMU) to improve the creation of sustainable fibre-based packaging solutions.

The ProAmpac-WMU partnership is not just a collaboration but a strategic move to enhance ProAmpac’s “Fiberization of Packaging” strategy. This strategy, which focuses on creating and researching curbside recyclable and compostable alternatives to traditional packaging, will be greatly supported by this alliance.

As a leader in packaging sustainability, ProAmpac is integrating this new university collaboration into its expanding global network of academic partners, which focuses on materials and food science.

These partnerships not only enhance ProAmpac’s research and development capabilities but also align with its ProActive Sustainability and ProActive Intelligence initiatives.

Additionally, these alliances foster innovation across all product categories, underscoring ProAmpac’s unwavering commitment to a circular economy.

“The partnership with Western Michigan University supports ProAmpac’s material science team on developing innovative fiber-based technologies,” said Hesam Tabatabaei, senior vice president of global product development and innovation at ProAmpac.

“WMU’s expertise in fiber manufacturing and broad range of capabilities will help accelerate our ability to deliver fiber-based packaging that meets growing market demand for curbside recyclable and compostable solutions. It also enables us to proactively address Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations with scalable, science-based innovation.”

The partnership will further support ProAmpac’s commitment to its ‘Fibre-First Packaging’ strategy, driving progress in sustainable material development.

“We’re excited to partner with ProAmpac to advance fiber-based packaging innovation,” said Dr. Kecheng Li, chair, TAPPI fellow, of WMU.

“By combining our fiber expertise and barrier coating with ProAmpac’s material science leadership and global commercial scale, we can accelerate the development of more sustainable and recyclable packaging solutions.”

In April 2025, ProAmpac expanded its dairy packaging range with butter wraps solutions designed to enhance product protection and sustainability.

Furthermore, ProAmpac partners with ScottsMiracle-Gro to advance recyclable packaging technology designed to replace traditional multilayer plastic films with fibre-based, curbside recyclable alternatives.

Recently, ProAmpac partnered with ScottsMiracle-Gro to develop insecticide packaging that ensures durability and product integrity while promoting sustainability.
