Handgards expands foodservice reach with Albany packaging acquisition

Albany Packaging focuses on foodservice packaging, particularly paper folding cartons.

USA – Handgards, a major US distributor of foodservice products, has completed its acquisition of Albany Packaging USA, a Florida-based supplier of paper-based packaging solutions.

The deal, announced on September 26, 2025, aims to strengthen offerings in sustainable materials for the food industry. Financial terms remain undisclosed.

Albany Packaging, headquartered in Deerfield Beach, specializes in paper folding cartons and related items like coffee sleeves.

These products serve supermarkets, bakeries, restaurants, and convenience stores, providing eco-friendly alternatives to plastic disposables.

The company’s focus on recyclable paper aligns with rising demand for reduced environmental impact in packaging.

Joe Kubicek, CEO of Handgards, expressed enthusiasm about the integration. “We are thrilled to welcome Albany Packaging to the Handgards family,” he said.

He noted that Albany’s expertise in paper-based solutions fits well with Handgards’ current lineup, which includes disposable gloves, tabletop items, and carryout products.

Kubicek added that the combined entity would enhance service to foodservice clients nationwide.

Handgards, a portfolio company of Wynnchurch Capital, operates 14 facilities totaling over 1.5 million square feet.

It ships more than 24 million cases annually from its El Paso, Texas base. Foley & Lardner LLP advised Wynnchurch on the legal aspects of the transaction.

Mitch Fisher and Jay Fisher, owners of Albany Packaging, highlighted the partnership’s potential.

They stated that teaming up with Handgards would speed up their growth plans and deliver greater value to customers through shared resources and expertise.

Just days earlier, Huhtamaki introduced a new line of fiber-based takeout containers made from recycled paper, priced at around US$0.15 per unit in bulk orders.

The containers, designed for hot and cold foods, decompose in industrial composting facilities within 90 days and target similar markets like quick-service restaurants.

According to industry analysts, such developments signal a market shift, with US foodservice packaging sales projected to hit US$25 billion by 2027, driven by regulations favoring biodegradable options.

The acquisition positions Handgards to capture more of this growth. Albany’s established distribution network in the Southeast will integrate with Handgards’ logistics, potentially cutting delivery times for paper products by up to 20%.

Customers can expect broader access to customized cartons that meet FDA standards for food contact.

Handgards plans to maintain Albany’s operations while exploring joint R&D for advanced paper composites.

The combined workforce now exceeds 1,200 employees, supporting expanded production capacity.
