Coveris launches PFAS-free monomaterial pet food packaging ahead of EU PPWR deadline

Pet food packaging faces unique challenges: high fat content can cause grease migration, long shelf life requirements demand oxygen and moisture barriers, and large bag sizes require structural strength to prevent tearing.

AUSTRIA – Coveris has developed a range of PFAS-free, monomaterial pet food packaging, including MonoFlexE Opti Weight, MonoFlexBE Metallised, and MonoFlexE Lite, designed to comply with the EU PPWR’s August 12, 2026 deadline.

The company notes that pet food producers are actively seeking solutions that balance product protection, environmental impact, and operational efficiency.

All solutions have been developed with a PFAS-free design approach, supporting customers in preparation for upcoming regulatory requirements. Coveris will present the range at Interzoo 2026 (May 12–15) in Nuremberg, Germany.

The PFAS Problem in Pet Food Packaging

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often called “forever chemicals,” have been used in food packaging to provide grease and water resistance.

However, they persist in the environment, accumulate in living organisms, and have been linked to health concerns.

The PPWR’s August 12, 2026 deadline for PFAS restrictions in food-contact packaging has created urgency for alternatives that perform without the chemistry.

Three Solutions, One Compliance Goal

The MonoFlexE Opti Weight Bag is a lightweight solution that reduces material consumption without compromising performance, provides cost optimization including through reduction of packaging-related taxes, and is fully recyclable, PFAS-free, and offers a premium shelf appearance.

The MonoFlexBE Metallised is a fully recyclable PE monomaterial solution with a metalized inner layer that facilitates high-barrier performance.

Designed for applications requiring protection against oxygen and moisture, it enables shelf life extension while maintaining a high-quality look and feel, making it particularly suited to premium pet food formats.

MonoFlexE Lite is available in barrier and non-barrier structures and integrates adaptable sealing options.

It is compatible with Freshlife technology, supporting product freshness and shelf life, and can support high-quality print to enhance on-pack communication, while offering optional features such as anti-mist for improved presentation.

Why This Matters for Pet Food Brands

Pet food packaging faces unique challenges: high fat content can cause grease migration, long shelf life requirements demand oxygen and moisture barriers, and large bag sizes require structural strength to prevent tearing.

Coveris’s PFAS-free, monomaterial solutions address all three without relying on problematic chemistry.

When Compliance Drives Innovation

A PFAS ban that forces reformulation could have been a crisis for pet food brands. Coveris has turned it into a product launch.

The new range proves that grease resistance, barrier performance, and recyclability can coexist without forever chemicals.
