EGYPT – Egypt’s plastic exports represent a substantial portion, accounting for 27% of the total exports from the chemical and fertilizer sector, totaling US$1.75 billion, as per the Chemical and Fertilizers Export Council (CEC).
Under the patronage of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Trade and Industry Ahmed Samir, the CEC has announced the launch of PLASTEX 2024 and the Egypt Plast 2024 exhibitions at the Egypt Expo and Convention Authority.
These exhibitions, occupying 30,000 sqm across three halls, will display intermediate and final plastic products, petrochemical raw materials, and related equipment.
Egypt Plast exhibition has attracted 118 participating companies while PLASTEX boasts the participation of 242 companies, accompanied by 12 countries including China, Turkey, Taiwan, India, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Morocco, and Italy.
Aligned with the Ministry’s initiative promoting participation in specialized exhibitions, the CEC is backing five small and micro Egyptian companies.
Additionally, it’s offering 15 training courses for the plastics industry on the sidelines of these exhibitions.
In 2021, the country witnessed a surge in plastic product exports, hitting US$2 billion, up from US$1.44 billion in the preceding year, as revealed by Nevin Gamea, the former Minister of Trade and Industry.
The minister noted that plasticware industry became an imperative component of Egypt’s local manufacturing over the past ten years as a result of relying on plastic materials instead of other items like glass and metals.
Accordingly, the productive capacity of between 40 and 60 percent of factories that produce synthetic fibers draws on plastic materials, according to Gamea.
She also pointed out that the government pays greater attention to such industry, which has been reflected through establishing two industrial complexes for tupperware industries in Alexandria that include 442 industrial units.
Egypt’s commitment to the plastic industry is evident through the provision of the Marghem 1 and Marghem 2 complexes in Alexandria, furnishing the industry with 442 industrial units, Gamea mentioned.
Acknowledging the government’s support during the pandemic, Gamea highlighted its role in averting factory closures.
Egypt’s exports have been consistently hovering around the US$100 billion mark annually, particularly due to such support for the production and export sectors.
Gamea made these statements during Plastex 2022, an expo in Egypt focused on the plastic and petrochemical industries.
