Klöckner Pentaplast launches HP3 food-to-go pack that keeps meals 10°c hotter with cool-to-touch exterior

The UK’s ban on expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS) single-use foodservice packaging, which took effect in October 2023, left a gap in the market for large-portion food-to-go containers that can withstand hot, oily, saucy foods.

UK – Klöckner Pentaplast has launched the kp Infinity HP3, a large-portion food-to-go pack made from recyclable Expanded Polypropylene that keeps food more than 10°C hotter than alternative packaging while maintaining a cool, comfortable exterior, and is not subject to the UK’s ban on EPS/XPS single-use foodservice packaging.

The HP3 is manufactured from EPP, a monopolymer material that is recyclable in existing PP waste streams.

Every pack carries prominent, embossed “Recycle Me” messaging and recycling code 5 to guide consumers at point of disposal.

The pack is naturally waterproof and resistant to hot oils, acids, and alkalis, and is also microwaveable.

Designed for Large Portions

Austin Schwarz, sales director for UK & Ireland at kp Food Packaging, explained that customers have been asking for a larger, tougher pack for some of the most-loved dishes on today’s menus.

He noted that the company has designed exactly that, without compromising on recyclability, performance, or the quality that kp customers expect.

By producing the HP3 in the UK, the company can deliver this solution with speed, assurance, and a reduced environmental footprint.

The HP3 is available for delivery at the end of April through kp’s network of distributors and wholesalers.

Why EPP Beats EPS

The UK’s ban on expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS) single-use foodservice packaging, which took effect in October 2023, left a gap in the market for large-portion food-to-go containers that can withstand hot, oily, saucy foods.

EPS was widely used for Chinese takeaway containers, curry trays, and large salad bowls.

EPP offers similar thermal insulation and durability but with a critical advantage: it is recyclable in standard polypropylene waste streams, unlike EPS which is rarely accepted in curbside recycling.

Performance That Matters

The HP3’s ability to keep food more than 10°C hotter than alternatives translates directly into customer satisfaction, hotter food on delivery means fewer complaints and less food waste.

The cool-to-touch exterior protects delivery drivers and customers from burns, while the waterproof and oil-resistant properties prevent soggy bottoms and grease leaks that stain car seats and tabletops.

The pack is also microwaveable, allowing consumers to reheat leftovers without transferring to another container.

Made in the UK

By manufacturing the HP3 in the UK, kp reduces transport distances compared to importing similar products from continental Europe or Asia.

Shorter supply chains mean lower carbon emissions, faster replenishment, and reduced risk of customs delays. For distributors and wholesalers, “made in the UK” also simplifies compliance with packaging regulations.
