OMAN – Sohar Aluminium has partnered with Oman’s Environment Authority to host the third Aluminium Scrap Recycling Symposium on April 22 in Muscat, bringing together more than 100 participants from government and private sectors involved in scrap collection, recycling, and industrial waste management.
The event will be conducted under the patronage of Dr Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority.
The symposium aims to improve operational processes, fine-tune regulatory frameworks, and revisit past event suggestions to boost recycling efficiency in Oman.
Why Aluminium Recycling Matters
Aluminium is infinitely recyclable without loss of quality, and recycling saves up to 95 percent of the energy required for primary production.
Globally, aluminium beverage can recycling stands at approximately 75 percent, higher than PET bottles at 47 percent and glass at 42 percent. In the Middle East and North Africa, aluminium can recycling reached 58.7 percent in 2023.
What to Expect at the Symposium
The programme will showcase technical papers, recent studies, and panel discussions featuring experts from the Gulf Aluminium Council.
Topics will cover global recycling trends, opportunities for local value addition and SME investment, and best practices in sustainability, safety, and governance.
Eng Said bin Mohammed Al Masoudi, CEO of Sohar Aluminium, noted that the symposium upholds the firm’s dedication to creating a collaborative space for stakeholders in the aluminium and environmental sectors.
He stated that the event aims to enhance scrap management practices and promote sustainable methods to boost recycling efficiency, aligning with Oman’s shift toward a circular economy.
Oman’s Net-Zero Ambitions
Sohar Aluminium is playing a vital role in the nation’s ambitions to reduce carbon emissions and meet net-zero targets, whilst adhering to environmental, social, and governance standards.
Oman has set targets to reduce emissions and increase renewable energy capacity as part of its Vision 2040 economic diversification plan.
Efficient aluminium recycling directly contributes to both goals by reducing energy consumption and associated emissions.
When Scrap Becomes Strategy
One hundred participants. Multiple government agencies. Private sector recyclers. Sohar Aluminium is not hosting a conference, it is convening an ecosystem.
The symposium’s success will be measured not by attendance, but by whether the discussions translate into policy changes that make aluminium scrap flow more efficiently through Oman’s industrial supply chain.
