GERMANY – The Swiss packaging solutions provider, SIG, has inaugurated its €10 million Packaging Development Center Europe, situated at the site of the company’s packaging plants in Linnich, Germany.

This state-of-the-art center boasts advanced extrusion and finishing technology, alongside top-notch quality measurement systems and testing equipment.

SIG anticipates that this new facility will significantly enhance its packaging process in serial production, bolstering system validation capabilities and paving the way for future digital technologies.

The center’s primary objective is to expedite the development of novel and sustainable packaging formats and materials, meeting the surging market demands.

Constructed in adherence to the latest and most efficient energy standards, the facility reinforces SIG’s foothold in the sustainable packaging solutions market.

Marcel Schopen, the manager of SIG’s Test Field, Prototype, and Pilot Plant department, emphasized, “In today’s swiftly evolving food and beverage industry, staying ahead in new product development is crucial, and this extends to the packaging of the product.

“Our cutting-edge Packaging Development Center enables us to assist our customers at an accelerated pace, offering complete end-to-end solutions. We will be equipped to develop and validate innovative packaging solutions and materials more swiftly and effectively.

“Complemented by our existing co-creation and test-filling facilities for food and beverage products, we can manufacture carton sleeves, fill products in compliance with food hygiene regulations, and pack them onto pallets – essentially functioning as packaging and food & beverage mini factories from inception to completion.”

In other news, SIG Terra Alu-free Full barrier packaging material recently won Packaging Europe’s prestigious Sustainability Award 2023 in the ‘Climate’ category.

The awards are a global competition for sustainable packaging innovation and SIG was up against tough competition from all over the world.

Terra Alu-free Full barrier stood out to the jury. It has a high renewable share, a low carbon footprint and is designed for recycling.

Removing the aluminum layer reduces energy needs in the supply chain and contributes to lowering the CO2 footprint of packaging.

SIG is the innovator in the field of packaging materials without aluminum layer and has been since 2010.

SIG Terra Alu-free Full barrier further extends SIG’s lower-carbon packaging materials without aluminum layer for wider use with oxygen-sensitive products such as fruit juices, nectars, flavored milk and plant-based beverages.

This provides better access to healthy nutrition and reduces food waste, even in countries with complex supply chains.

The Sustainability Awards’ mission is to illuminate the most important innovations and initiatives across the packaging value chain, helping to accelerate adoption of best practice, better technologies, and nurturing cross-fertilization of ideas, in order to support positive environmental impacts.
