Tadweer Group targets 80% waste diversion by 2031

JORDAN – Tadweer Group, Abu Dhabi’s leading waste management entity, has highlighted its strategic vision and international expansion plans while participating in Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW).

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the circular economy and supporting the emirate’s sustainability goals, with a bold target to divert 80 percent of waste from landfills by 2031.

Ahmed Al Kayyoomi, Executive Director of Strategy and Business Performance at Tadweer Group said, “Our participation underscores Tadweer’s strategic priorities and commitment to innovative, sustainable solutions.”

Central to Tadweer’s roadmap is the Abu Dhabi waste-to-energy project, recently announced and expected to begin operations in 2027.

The facility is designed to convert municipal waste into energy, reducing landfill dependence while generating renewable power.

Complementing this, Tadweer has entered strategic partnerships with national entities, including Masdar and Beeah, to explore additional projects focused on turning waste into energy and other value-added products.

Al Kayyoomi also revealed Tadweer’s first international expansion initiative: a study for a waste-to-energy facility in Parkes, Australia.

“This marks a significant step in our ambition to share expertise and implement circular solutions globally,” he said.

Participation in ADSW has allowed Tadweer to connect with global technology providers specialising in waste collection, sorting, and conversion.

These collaborations are viewed as critical to achieving both regional and international sustainability objectives, supporting the group’s vision of an integrated waste management ecosystem.

The announcement aligns with a wider trend across the Middle East, where governments and private entities are increasingly investing in waste-to-resource and circular economy projects.

Similar initiatives in the UAE include Beeah’s integrated waste management operations and Masdar’s sustainable energy projects, reflecting a regional push to reduce environmental impact while promoting economic value creation.

Tadweer Group’s multi-pronged strategy, combining domestic infrastructure, international expansion, and technology partnerships, positions it as a pivotal player in the region’s sustainable waste management sector.

By 2031, achieving an 80 percent diversion rate could set a benchmark for other municipalities across the Gulf region, demonstrating that circular economy principles can be effectively scaled while meeting the growing demands of urbanization and environmental stewardship.
