Unilever South Africa partners with Mpact to slash waste, edging to zero-waste-to-landfill ambition

Mpact Waste Management helps companies translate Environmental, Social, and Governance targets into operational results through tailored waste solutions, compliance reporting, and partnerships that drive meaningful change.

SOUTH AFRICA – Unilever South Africa has partnered with Mpact Waste Management across its KwaZulu-Natal and Johannesburg manufacturing sites, fast-tracking the consumer goods giant’s zero waste to landfill ambition while generating an estimated 70 to 80 percent offset on waste management costs.

The partnership reflects a shared commitment to measurable, purpose-led collaboration that advances both environmental targets and local economic development.

Jermaine Rajah, National Sales and Relationship Manager at Mpact Waste Management, described the alliance as a powerful convergence of shared values in sustainability, innovation, and inclusive growth.

By the Numbers: Measurable Impact

The partnership’s early impact is already evident.

According to Rajah, many partners have reported significant offsets on their waste management contracts, with some managing to profit directly from their recyclables due to Mpact’s ability to buy recyclables directly from clients.

To date, Unilever has estimated an approximated 70 to 80 percent offset on its waste management costs through the program.

In Mooi River, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpact facilitated a collaboration between Unilever and a local agri-business that transforms selected food production waste into nutritionally balanced animal feed.

This initiative has created 23 direct jobs in Mooi River while supporting additional livelihoods across the supply chain.

By diverting organic waste from landfill, the project also contributes to methane reduction, a critical climate win given that methane is 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period.

Aligning with Unilever’s Global Sustainability Strategy

The cohesive relationship directly supports Unilever’s four key sustainability pillars.

Under Climate, the company aims for net zero emissions across the value chain by 2039. Under Nature, it pursues regenerative agriculture and deforestation-free sourcing.

Under Plastics, it champions a circular approach to packaging by reducing virgin plastic use and increasing recycling.

Under Livelihoods, it ensures decent incomes and growth opportunities for those in its value chain.

Rajah explained that by integrating Mpact’s materials recovery expertise with Unilever’s commitment to reduce waste and emissions, they are building scalable systems that benefit people, the planet, and the local economy.

Building Systems That Deliver Lasting Value

Mpact Waste Management helps companies translate Environmental, Social, and Governance targets into operational results through tailored waste solutions, compliance reporting, and partnerships that drive meaningful change.

Rajah noted that the organization supports clients beyond basic compliance, whether through landfill diversion, community benefit, or measurable sustainability impact.
