UPM, Michelman, BOBST validate paper-based packaging concepts aligned with EU single-use plastics directive

By validating their materials and equipment together before offering them to customers, UPM, Michelman, and BOBST have removed the trial-and-error from SUPD compliance.

EUROPE – UPM Specialty Materials, Michelman, and BOBST have created two validated paper-based packaging concepts aligned with EU packaging rules, combining fibre-based materials, bio-based coatings, and coating line expertise.

The partners have taken into account process requirements and runnability to support efficient industrial production.

The new concepts aim to deliver functional performance while supporting recyclability and, where relevant, compostability across selected applications.

Two Concepts for Different Barrier Needs

The first concept is designed to support SUPD-compliant paper packaging for applications such as tea bags, oatmeal, and sugar stick-packs, incorporating bio-based coatings with good moisture and mineral oil barriers and heat sealability.

These applications require protection against humidity and oil migration from high-fat contents.

The second concept is suitable for applications requiring an improved oxygen barrier level, such as single-pack cookies and chocolate, enabling lower coat weights and improved material efficiency.

Oxygen barrier is critical for preventing rancidity in fatty foods and preserving flavour volatiles.

The concept achieves this without aluminium foil or EVOH layers that complicate recycling.

Integration Across the Value Chain

The collaboration brings together three specialised capabilities. UPM supplies the barrier base papers (including UPM Solide Lucent and UPM Asendo grades) that provide the fibre substrate and mechanical strength.

Michelman contributes the bio-based coating formulations that impart barrier properties without plastic.

BOBST provides the coating and converting equipment expertise needed to apply those coatings at industrial scale with uniform coverage and consistent seal strength.

By validating the structures together, the partners de-risk adoption for converters and brand owners.

Showcasing at interpack 2026

Sample structures of both solutions will be available at interpack 2026 at UPM Specialty Materials’ stand in Hall 8A, Stand F29 and Michelman’s stand in Hall 8A, Stand B25.

The two companies will also share insights in a joint presentation titled “Simplifying Adoption of Sustainable Packaging for Brands” on Monday, 11 May on the SPOTLIGHT Forum stage.

When Three Companies Solve One Problem

A coating that cannot be applied at speed is a lab project. A paper that runs poorly on a converting line is a factory headache.

By validating their materials and equipment together before offering them to customers, UPM, Michelman, and BOBST have removed the trial-and-error from SUPD compliance.

For converters, that means less risk; for brands, faster time to market.
