SWEDEN – Ardagh Glass Packaging-Europe (AGP-Europe), an operating business of Ardagh Group, has engaged in a 10-year renewable energy Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Renewable Power Capital’s (RPC) newly constructed 161MW Vitberget wind project in Sweden.
Schneider Electric, the principal advisor in corporate renewable energy procurement and carbon management, assisted Ardagh in the project selection and PPA negotiation.
The PPA covers 100% of Vitberget’s capacity and is scheduled to commence in 2026 once operations commence. This agreement will address approximately 40% of AGP-Europe’s power load, mitigating Ardagh’s Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Renewable energy is a pivotal objective in Ardagh’s sustainability strategy. This new PPA represents an incremental stride towards achieving Ardagh’s 2030 objective of transitioning to 100% renewable electricity, as well as a foundational step towards realizing its 2030 Science Based Targets initiative CO2 reduction.
Vitberget is part of RPC’s 553MW cluster of four wind farms in the Kramfors and Sollefteå municipalities.
This PPA follows RPC’s announcement earlier this month of ordering 80 Nordex turbines for these wind farms, confirming its commitment to the Swedish wind sector.
This PPA, combined with the recent Nordex turbines order, underscores RPC’s dedication to advancing the Swedish land-based wind sector, further contributing to the decarbonization of European industries.
Martin Petersson, CEO AGP-Europe, stated, “We are delighted to take this next step on our sustainability journey, securing renewable energy from RPC in a long-term partnership.
“Having recently opened our new NextGen Furnace at AGP in Obernkirchen, Germany, which could save approximately 45,000 tonnes of carbon annually, the impact of this PPA will be significant.”
Recently, Ardagh Glass California formed a partnership with CI Renewables LLC for a solar energy project at its Madera manufacturing plant.
The 10-megawatt solar project, being constructed and operated by Dana Point, California-based VALTA Energy, is expected to be completed later this year. The solar project will supply around 25 percent of the electricity needed at Ardagh’s Madera facility.
“We are pleased to see this important solar project for Ardagh move forward,” says Walter Serafyn, managing partner of Baltimore-based CI Renewables.
“This is the second large-scale solar project we have developed for Ardagh, and we look forward to more opportunities with Ardagh in the future.”
About a year ago, Ardagh’s Madera facility was awarded its ninth Energy Star plant certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
At that time, Ardagh listed upgrading and optimizing its furnaces, using recycled glass, and installing energy-efficient lighting fixtures as among its energy-saving initiatives.
