US – Amcor Rigid Packaging (ARP) has developed a two-step, lightweighting technology that reportedly eliminates more than 50% of the material and weight in the finish of the bottle.
ARP says its new Quantum technology for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles deliver sustainability benefits, lower costs and an improved packaging appearance.
The company says that by removing more than 50% of the material and weight from the finish, the new Quantum technology reduces manufacturing costs and GHG emissions, resulting in energy savings and lower carbon emissions compared to bottles with a traditional finish.
Quantum technology also reportedly allows for up to 100% recycled material use and provides a superior consumer experience with a more sustainable, fully recyclable package.
Terry Patcheak, Vice President of research and development in Sustainability and Project Management at Amcor Rigid Packaging said: “Our customers and consumers alike are looking for ways to support the circular economy and eliminate waste, and our engineers have developed a new technology that meets their needs and advances more sustainable packaging.
“We’re helping our customers support source reduction, reduce material use and reduce weight, which means a lighter and more sustainable package.”
Initially developed for the spirits industry, the Quantum optimized finish technology can be used for packaging in multiple segments including healthcare, home and personal care, food and dairy.
PET, which has rapidly become the world’s preferred packaging material, is lightweight, shatterproof, recloseable, resealable, reusable, and infinitely recyclable.
In addition, PET bottles often have the lowest carbon footprint, and their production results in up to 70% fewer greenhouse-gas emissions than other packaging materials, according to Amcor’s lifecycle analysis.
Earlier in September of this year, APR introduced a sustainable packaging line for ready-to-drink dairy market
The company launched the DairySeal line of packaging featuring ClearCor, an advanced polyethylene terephthalate (PET) barrier.
The ClearCor PET barrier technology is a concentrated capsulation in the center of the preform that allows more flexibility and resin options.
This technology positively impacts the overall performance of the barrier in the packaging and maintains recyclability.
The DairySeal line of packaging is made with up to 80 percent of recyclable material while maintaining superior taste and performance for the brand.
Greg Rosati, Amcor Rigid Packaging Vice-President of marketing & sales for specialty containers said: “With the development of our DairySeal line, we are able to offer PET packaging that helps improve sustainability for brands in the dairy alternatives, nutritional drinks, and ready-to-drink coffee space.”
