ITALY – Bormioli Pharma, a pharmaceutical packaging manufacturer has teamed up with clean technology company Loop Industries to develop a 100% recycled PET pharmaceutical bottle.
The innovative bottle is crafted entirely from 100% recycled virgin-quality Loop™ PET resin, representing a notable advancement in adopting environmentally responsible alternatives within the pharmaceutical industry.
The partnership between Loop and Bormioli aims to provide responsible packaging solutions to the global pharmaceutical sector.
The bottle has been confirmed to release no substances of toxicological concern.
This development aligns with Bormioli’s EcoPositive initiative, constituting half of its standard catalogue and emphasizing its commitment to sustainable offerings in the market.
Bormioli CEO Andrea Lodetti states, “Through this collaboration with Loop, we’re strengthening our role as a solid, quality, and reliable partner for the pharmaceutical industry.
“Loop Industries shares our values and commitment, and together we’ve introduced a new pharma-grade sustainable solution, demonstrating even greater safety standards than traditional ones.”
Loop founder and CEO Daniel Solomita adds, “Through our collaboration with Bormioli Pharma, we have developed an innovative pharmaceutical packaging solution manufactured from 100% recycled virgin-quality Loop PET resin.
“This high-quality packaging alternative sets a new standard for responsible solutions in the pharmaceutical industry.”
This transformative process aligns with the increasing recognition within the pharmaceutical sector of the need for sustainable practices and materials to mitigate environmental impact.
A recent laboratory test, conducted by a globally recognized leader in the field, affirms that Loop™ PET resin meets the stringent standards outlined by the EU Pharmacopeia and US Pharmacopeia.
Compliance with these standards positions the resin as suitable for use in pharmaceutical packaging applications, offering a reliable and environmentally conscious option for industry players.
Loop secures US$66M in new funding
In another development, Loop Industries recently secured a US$66 million from Reed Management to expedite the production of 100% recycled polyester fibers and PET plastics in Europe.
Loop and Reed plan to establish a strategic long-term partnership through a 50/50 joint venture. Under a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU), the funding will comprise an US$11 million equity investment in the JV to acquire exclusive rights to commercialization projects, a US$22 million loan from the JV to Loop, and US$33 million to cover initial costs for developing projects in Europe, including Loop’s equity contribution to the previously announced JV to construct an Infinite Loop plant in Saint-Avold, France.
This partnership reflects the commitment of both parties to capitalize on the potential of the rapidly developing European market, driven by more stringent European plastic recycling regulations and commitments by global brands to achieve their sustainability targets.
It also enables Loop Industries to reduce funding needs for its equity contributions, supporting the rollout of an increased number of facilities to be constructed in the European market using the Infinite Loop technology.
Loop Industries will receive royalty and engineering fees directly from the planned facilities in Europe.
