B’ZEOS secures US5.21M seed funding to expand seaweed-based packaging solutions

SWITZERLAND – Sustainable packaging innovator B’ZEOS has raised over €5 million (US$5.21m) in seed funding, combining equity and grants to expand production of seaweed packaging solutions.

The round was led by Faber with support from International Chemical Investors Group (ICIG)’s venture capital arm.

According to B’ZEOS, the funds will propel the development and commercialization of its compostable, seaweed-based packaging solutions.

Seaweed, touted for its rapid growth and minimal resource requirements, serves as the foundation for B’ZEOS’s packaging materials.

Unlike conventional crops, seaweed requires no land or freshwater for cultivation, sequesters CO₂ during growth, and eliminates microplastic concerns.

B’ZEOS’s biobased packaging solutions are home-compostable, industry-ready, and compatible with existing production lines, offering functionality comparable to virgin plastics without the associated environmental costs.

Industry applications and sustainability goals

B’ZEOS’s seaweed-based materials are positioned to meet diverse packaging needs across industries, aiding corporate partners in achieving their sustainability targets.

Founder and CEO Guy Maurice highlighted the scalability and eco-friendly nature of the company’s innovations, “We’ve developed a truly sustainable seaweed-based packaging solution derived from multiple seaweed species.

“Our mission extends beyond creating an eco-friendly product; we’re delivering a scalable, industry-ready alternative for global packaging manufacturers.”

To date, B’ZEOS has conducted five paid pilot projects with its materials, including collaborations with major industry players like Nestlé.

With the new funding, the company plans to run additional pilots and initiate test-shop production with corporate partners.

Faber’s focus on advancing ocean-based technologies and ICIG’s expertise in compounding will support B’ZEOS in refining its products, accelerating production, and scaling to meet growing industry demands.

The company also aims to elevate its Technology Readiness Level (TRL) from TRL7 to TRL8, moving closer to full-scale commercialization.

“As demand for sustainable packaging accelerates, we’re thrilled to partner with B’ZEOS,” said Rita Sousa, Partner at Faber.

“Their seaweed-based innovations align with our vision of driving environmental change and reshaping industries for a sustainable future.”

This funding builds on previous support from organizations like Sustainable Ocean Alliance, Innovation Norwa, and the Eureka Network’s Eurostars programme, positioning B’ZEOS as a leader in sustainable, seaweed-based packaging.

With its innovative approach, B’ZEOS is set to redefine the packaging industry, demonstrating the potential of ocean-based materials to drive positive environmental and industrial change.
