UK – Sustainable packaging company, Coveris is preparing to introduce a new recyclable and flexible thermoforming film solution called Formpeel P, for use in a range of medical packaging applications.

The film will be premiered at the upcoming international trade fair COMPAMED 2023, scheduled to take place from November 13th to 16th in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The co-extruded film has been specifically designed to provide high protection for medical products.

This solution, according to the company, is suitable for thermoforming purposes and offers puncture resistance.

It can be used for various medical packaging purposes. Depending on the application, it can be applied on a peelable polyethylene or polyolefin base.

The Formpeel P film can serve as a solution for ethylene oxide sterilization, as well as plasma and gamma irradiation.

Coveris Medical Director, Jan-Willem Bruijsten, said, “At Coveris, we have built our entire strategy around a vision of No Waste because we believe that fighting waste in all its forms is the driving force behind a more sustainable future.

“As part of this journey we launched a brand new division this year – ReCover – which offers unique recycling solutions for the packaging industry.

“The revolutionary waste repurposing process is closing the loop by using a highly effective deinking and mechanical recycling technology, reusing high-quality feedstock from plastic packaging to produce new packaging material.”

Once launched, Formpeel P will be added to Coveris’ existing portfolio of sustainable materials, which includes Formpeel T, Flexopeel T, and Cleerpeel solutions.

The new solution has been designed to provide the same functionality and safety as the company’s existing packaging materials.

The company stated that Formpeel P, when combined with Cleerpeel, can assist in the aseptic extraction of medical products while promoting the utilization of sustainable resources.

Last month, the packaging company partnered with Notpla, a provider of sustainable packaging solutions, to manufacture new cardboard takeaway boxes for a significant sporting event.

The new takeaway boxes will debut at the Open ATP 500 tennis tournament in Vienna, Austria from October 23rd to 29th, 2023.

These boxes feature Notpla’s seaweed-based barrier coating material and plant extracts, providing an eco-friendly alternative to plastic.

The coating is applied to boards that are certified as sustainably sourced, providing resistance to grease and water. The boxes are recyclable. Alternatively, if placed in alternative waste streams, the coating naturally breaks down within 4-6 weeks at the end of its life.

Coveris said its collaboration with Notpla aligns with its ‘No Waste’ vision, launched by the group’s leadership team based in Vienna.
